Mushing sounds
[]
It's getting to be that time of year (modulo our continuing crazy-hot weather), so over the weekend I was looking at race information for the upcoming season and came across MP3 recordings made at last year's John Beargrease (a distance race in Minnesota). The URL is http://www.trackseventeen.com/media/beargrease05/ . Crown and Image were the only dogs in the house when I started going through the recordings, and at the sound of the "ring tones" (actually mp3s, too) they both ran into my office and went into full-on tilty-heady mode. Then Crow tried to climb up on the desk holding the speakers. Number 16 was good for a rise, too (towards the end you hear the musher saying "atta boy" and then "on by," and then the sound of the runners fading into the distance), but I think number 15 is really special - you hear something coming, then the panting of the dogs, then their feet on the snow, and then the runners as the sled passes. About 4 or 5 years ago I was skiing on a particularly beautiful February day at one of the nearby state forests, and that's exactly what I heard. Then a six-dog team (with a passenger!) came charging up the hill, rounded a curve, and was gone. It was one of those moments where you can recognize even at the time that it's something you'll remember forever. That Beargrease recording is deeply evocative of that one moment. -- Melinda Shore - Software longa, hardware brevis - "Finger pointing" is how incompetent, corrupt political leaders describe the public interest in accountability -- Max Sawicky |

Crown she's really come up in the world! started going through the recordings, and at the sound of the "ring tones" (actually mp3s, too) they both ran into my office and went into full-on tilty-heady mode. the yiping is fabulous, especially in the first and last recordings. thanks for sharing. it's supposed to be 90F today, so some winter sounds are just the ticket. -- shelly http://www.cat-sidh.net http://cat-sidh.blogspot.com/ http://letters-to-esther.blogspot.com/ (updated 7/10/05) |

Actually, she's a different dog from the one who arrived here last spring. the yiping is fabulous, especially in the first and last recordings. The dogs aren't quite sure what to make of it, but they're sure that it somehow is addressed to them. Thread tying, I had to laugh on one of the recordings to hear one of the mushers who'd headed off in the wrong direction use the same "you made a mistake" marker I use, which is the lengthy polysyllabic word "nononononononono." -- Melinda Shore - Software longa, hardware brevis - "Finger pointing" is how incompetent, corrupt political leaders describe the public interest in accountability -- Max Sawicky |

Mike always said she was the best of his dogs although he'd also say that she was "complicated" and that maybe he ran her in lead too much before she was ready. I expect that having the entire summer off helped her relax, if that was really an issue. She's also decided to follow Emmett around around making googoo I-lurve-you-Emmett eyes at him nearly non-stop and she keeps inviting him to play. She occasionally goes into you-don't-exist mode still, but it's become rare. After this current heat wave passes the temperatures should become more seasonal and we can start doing some training in harness. I picked up an ATV over the weekend and last week mowed some trails out back, so it's just a matter of having the temperatures come down. I hope to be posting some pictures of dog ass (what the team looks like from the driver's seat) in a few weeks. -- Melinda Shore - Software longa, hardware brevis - "Finger pointing" is how incompetent, corrupt political leaders describe the public interest in accountability -- Max Sawicky |

But it never really got cold enough to be useful (i.e. snow), although one time the temperature dropped into the 20s. The barn where I was riding had a lot of PVC pipe above ground and it burst in over 60 places. I knew I wasn't in the north anymore when a friend's husband told me to clear the ice off my windshield by pouring hot water on it. Do that around here in the winter and the hot water freezes into a new sheet of ice that's harder to clear off. Mind you, you're reasonably close to outstanding snow (in the Sierras). The largest nordic skiing resort in the US is somewhere around Truckee, I think. Anyway, the heat is interfering with starting training but the drought just goes on and on and on and is starting to become a source of real concern. -- Melinda Shore - Software longa, hardware brevis - It is worth pointing out that the difference between the free market and cronyism is not subtle, and getting less subtle by the minute -- John Holbo |
