A puddle?
I'd be careful about using electric clippers around that! lol

If you are talking about a poodle, that's a different matter (though the
name did derive from the German word 'pudel' (or something along those
lines, wihout stopping to double check), meaning to splash in water, their
origins being very much of a working water dog.

Personally, I would be wary of trying to do something to my dog's coat from
advice gleemed from a site, any fool can put just about anything out there
on the www (see below - you fell for that one? -but tbh so did I at first, a
good few yrs ago now but got put right back on track quickly enuff!),

Anyway, if you have to be seen out in public with your dog, you want him to
look reasonably presentable. Grooming is a learned trade, and I'm sure you
will be able to pick it up quickly, but as in most practical trades,
practical tutition is the best way to learn it.

It's garbage - that's why its free... you get what you pay for generally in
life, and free usually equates to cr*p. Have a look at the kind of posts he
fills this and other groups with, then put 2 and 2 together. Would an
achieved and viable trainer / animal behaviour specialist behave in such a
way? Much of the manual is plagiarized material (as I remember), and some of
it is at very least, downright dangerous.

If you want a better understanding of your dog, read Jean Donaldson, Ian
Dunbar, Suzanne Clothier and material by recognised, achieved authors.

If you mean poodle, get a video, a book, informational dvd, talk to a
groomer, take a class at a local community college, etc.

I recently started grooming my toy poodle and it has gone much better than I
expected. I watched a video and read the tips in the book that came with my
clippers (go for an expensive pair, they work better). The video showed how
to desensitize the dog to the noise of the clippers, how to cut different
parts of the coat, how to properly restrain the dog and how to clean and
operate the clippers. It was very helpful and I wouldn't try doing it
without seeing the video (or someone in person showing you what to do). I
only tried to clip Maui twice so far but he is very calm and relaxed and he
doesn't squirm or try to get away. He sits nicely even while I do his face!
It is great and should help keep his coat nice in between professional
groomings.
