dog show surprise
http://www.raudogshows.com/shows/Sep...PoconoMnt.html
I went passed this place on Friday and wanted to stop but I was on the way to work. It seems to just be a Pennsylvania thing but I never even know it existed so I thought that was a pretty cool thing to see near my town (since nothing is ever near me). |

You didn't know they existed? I was a little confused also. It's a dog show. I didn't go to the Rau link but I assume it's a conformation show since that's what Rau does. Not just a Pennsylvania thing. And I'd expect that they would have as many dog attending from New Jersey and New York. Depending on the breeds and the expected majors, it could certainly pull also out of Delaware, Maryland, Connecticut. Are you surprised that it's in the Poconos? Or are you surprised that there is an AKC club in the Poconos that is capable of putting on a dog show? The Poconos is not the end of the world. There are conformation shows within a couple hours drive of the Poconos for much of the year. Between all the New Jersey shows and the Harrisburg and Philadelphia show (and then the central PA and the southern NYS shows), I can't imagine that it's all that difficult to find a conformation show accessible for someone living in the Poconos. Now if you want a pretty cool thing, take a longer drive from the Poconos up to the NYS Finger Lakes - a weekend trip. The end of September every year there is a combination conformation, obedience and agility show. Huge show. They also usually do something cool like lure coursing - not as a competition but to introduce people to something other than the big three. ~~Judy |

Obedience numbers have been dwindling, but Rally seems to be perking those up a bit. Still, the Mid-Atlantic states are pretty heavily loaded with dog shows in general. -- Janet B www.bestfriendsdogobedience.com http://pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/bestfr...bedience/album |

I don't live in the Poconos and the location for the dog show isn't really considered the Poconos either. And yes, it is surprising that the dog show was near my house (well 15 minutes from it) The Poconos is not the end of the world. Its pretty bad where I live. The nearest mall is 40 minutes, the local Walmart is 30 minutes (soon to be 40 as they are moving it). There are conformation shows within a couple hours drive of the Poconos for much of the year. Yeah, but I am not talking about a couple of hours, I talking about a couple of minutes, big difference at least to me. Between all the New Jersey shows and the Harrisburg and Philadelphia show (and then the central PA and the southern NYS shows), I can't imagine that it's all that difficult to find a conformation show accessible for someone living in the Poconos. |

I'm about 6 miles from a village fairgrounds and while they have horse shows there (and demolition derby and trotting horse races) I can't recall a dog show ever on that site. However, the big upcoming Wine Country (Californians will kindly not snicker) Dog Show that Judy mentioned is at a state park a good distance from pretty much anything. -- Melinda Shore - Software longa, hardware brevis - Tell your Congressman that you want Don Young's Way built in Louisiana, not Alaska |

There is, however, a breed show each August in Owego at the park there. And an agility trial in Ithaca in July. If you go the distance to Syracuse and Rochester, there is a fair amount of dog stuff near you. The dog clubs in Ithaca do put on shows and trials - they just go to Syracuse and Wine Country to do it. Wonder why they don't ever use the village fairgrounds? I know the agility people all really like the livestock pavillion at Cornell (I've never been there) but there must be a reason why there's nothing at the fairgrounds. Camping. perhaps? However, the big upcoming Wine Country (Californians will kindly not snicker) Dog Show that Judy mentioned is at a state park a good distance from pretty much anything. And, wine reference aside, no one should snicker at the show itself. It IS a major, major event. In the middle of nowhere. ~~Judy |

Judy wrote: There is, however, a breed show each August in Owego at the park there. And an agility trial in Ithaca in July. Sure. I'm just saying that dog events in Podunk aren't unheard of, at least around here. Although, come to think of it, I live a few miles from Podunk and I've never heard of a dog show, dog classes, or anything dog there (or anything else of any nature since the cross-country ski center closed). Wonder why they don't ever use the village fairgrounds? I know the agility people all really like the livestock pavillion at Cornell (I've never been there) but there must be a reason why there's nothing at the fairgrounds. Camping. perhaps? I'm not sure anybody knows it's there. There's certainly lots and lots and lots of people camping onsite during the annual Grassroots Music Festival, also at the fairground. I'm not crazy about taking classes at the livestock pavilion. It looks clean but there's too much horse and cow dookie in the footing and my dogs never seem to quite get past that. And, wine reference aside, no one should snicker at the show itself. It IS a major, major event. In the middle of nowhere. A very beautiful nowhere, for those who feel like making the trip. Unfortunately (or not) I'm off to NH this weekend to pick up my new dog box, so I won't be able to go up there myself. I'm actually pretty close to Romulus (20 minutes, maybe) so perhaps we shouldn't be making fun of the location, come to think of it. -- Melinda Shore - Software longa, hardware brevis - Tell your Congressman that you want Don Young's Way built in Louisiana, not Alaska |
