Breed Mix guesses for Gemini
Hi,
Our tenants (Kim and her two kids, Zack & Zoie) adopted a dog from the local SPCA almost two weeks ago. She was brought in as a neglect case with a litter of pups and was at the SPCA for about 4 weeks since she was emaciated. As you will see from the photos, she's still one skinny dog but after 6 weeks of good food, she's looking much better. The SPCA said that she is a whippet but my first response when I saw her was "What a big head!" as I was expecting a dry, lean whippet head. In fact her head seems too big for her body but I wonder if some of that is because she's so thin and under-muscled. I also think her ears are too houndy to be whippet. She's all white except for about a dozen or so small round body spots and many of the spots are almost invisible - that is they are spots on her skin but just a few colored hairs on her coat. I think she may be brindle. The only spot big enough to have any idea about color is on her ear and I see black hairs and tan hairs and I think it's brindle. Her pigmentation is black with black eye rims, black spotted nose and black spots on her lips In terms of personality Gemini is very sweet and reserved with people. She has made overtures to play with Pablo & Lucy and she loves to join in with the chase games. The scratches on her face are from Maggie the Cat explaining the House Rules on the first day. She's not a trotting dog but instead likes to erupt in a burst of speed. She's about the height of Lucy (roughly 21") and I think will be about 45-ish lbs. So the SPCA says Whippet, no doubt about it. I don't think she can be a purebred sighthound with that head but I think there's some in her - maybe a little bit of Greyhound or Whippet? I think there might be some Dalmatian in the woodpile but the vet says no way ( I love you Dr. Bonnie but I still think I'm right). Now this sounds strange but sometimes I get the idea of a bull terrier when I look at her face - something about her nose/muzzle and deep-set eyes. I don't really think there's BT in her but maybe there's some pit in her? Bhen I think of a pit personality I think of a gregarious dog with a big smile and whippy waggy tail. Gemini is friendly but very gentle & demure in her affection. And I don't see any pit in her body. A pointer or hound (foxhound?) could explain the ears. . . Here's some photos I took this week: http://makeashorterlink.com/?C38B218DB I didn't have anyone to pose her but I think you can get a decent idea to her body and head structure. Gemini is quite the distinctive looking dog - so what do you folks think she is? A Whip-Pit? A Grey-matian? A Greater Ithacan Slinky Dog? Chris and her smoothies Pablo and Lucy |

What an interesting looking dog! One shot looks a little Weim-like, she has more bulk than a Whippet or Greyhound certainly, so perhaps some BT could be in there someplace. Very unique dog! -- Janet B www.bestfriendsdogobedience.com http://pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/bestfr...bedience/album |

I know it's rare, but looks a little like one of these:

What looks slightly sighthoundy to me is the smooth rise over the loin. But definitely not anything near pure. And she has about the straightest/most upright withers I've ever seen. If anything in the sighthound family I think I'd verge toward Saluki type mixed with something like a Dal. |

I'd want to see more than that before I guessed sighthound; I think that's just a function of her weight and overall condition. And Saluki is about the last sighthound I'd guess, except maybe for deerhound; I have pictures around here of a Dal/Saluki cross, and it looks much more Saluki than Dal. Most sighthound crosses look much more sighthoundy than this dog. It's why we constantly get calls about the Greyhound/coonhound crosses in the pounds; they really do look like Greyhounds. This dog doesn't look even remotely sighthoundish to me, and I'm surrounded by sighthounds. Mustang Sally |

: http://makeashorterlink.com/?C38B218DB Excellent photos! And there is NO WAY this dog could be a purebred Whippet (although Whippets might come in this color, too). Somebody give these shelter folks a decent dog book. Some sighthound blood isn't impossible, but she is hardly even half sighthound. Dalmatian blood is possible too, but she is not half Dal either - 1st gen crosses have always more spotting/ticking than she does. Michelle mentions Porcelaine, and it is very, very close - except color! Porcelaines are always ee recessive yellows, this dog here isn't. So at least one parent has to be non-Porcelaine. Gemini is rather houndish anyway, so some kind of hound or gundog parent is possible. If she is close to Whippet size, she might very well have some Jack Russell there too. My guess: 1/4 Dalmatian or Pointer, 1/4 (or more) Bull Terrier, 1/4 JRT. Rest can be about whatever. Liisa |
