Tsuki on Geese
Well actually that should be Tsuki on Goose. Which in herding phrasing
means I had Tsuki work a goose today. I was thrilled with how he did. First, I've been reluctant to try him on poultry because he is so intense. I've been told that sometimes the dogs are different on poultry, but I didn't really want to risk anything getting hurt. So today I'm opening the gate to walk into a sheep arena to work Tsuki on sheep when over the fence comes a goose from the next arena over. The goose is heading for the gap under a gate that goes out to the pasture. Since Tsuki had been very good today, and we were in perfect position I had him walk up on the goose. Tsuki hesitated and looked sideways at the sheep in the corner. "Walk up" and I walk toward the goose. Tsuki eyes the goose with not a lot of interest and looks back at the sheep. "Walk up" so he did. Nicely. The handler who lost the goose opened the gate and propped it open. This caused the goose to step sideways. Ooops, Tsuki is uncertain, is he supposed to cut off the goose's path? I circle him around in front of the goose. Now he understands that, yes, the goose is what we are working. His head comes up, and he is paying attention to the goose now. Goose can see the difference too. Goose turns around and starts a deliberate march toward the open gate. I down Tsuki and continued to push the goose myself a few more feet. Goose goes through the gate without complaint, and I shut the gate behind it. Yay! Tsuki. -- Diane Blackman There is no moral victory in proclaiming to abhor violence while preaching with violent words. http://dog-play.com/ http://dogplayshops.com/ |

So The Goose decided to force your hand into testing Tsuki You are very good at relaying stories as I could picture the whole thing to include the moment the two animals made the mental connections. I've never even seen any herding but it sounds like this was a "Yes! That's It!" as well as a good chuckle moment. -- Tara |
