Older Dog w/ Gastric Problem + Antibiotics
A few months ago my dog developed sloppy poo and would go maybe 3 time
in one hour. The vet said he might have gastroenteritis. She put him (an eleven year old Collie) on antibiotics - Metronidazole 400mg - for 3 weeks. This worked really well but 5 days after the course ended it was back to square one. Today the dog starts 3 weeks of Flagyl 200mg but it seems to me the vet doesn't know what to do next. She has suggested Waltham Sensitive canned food. She told me the antibiotics accelerate the liver and are bad long term. Has anyone an idea what to do? Bear in mind : around the time the gastric problem started the dog started taking diet canned food (Waltham Low Digestive diet) and has lost weight.Could this food cause the problem? Also, sometimes the dog gets to the cats poo...and eats it!! Could this be the problem? I give the dog psyllium in his food to bulk him up. Also, Flagyl & Metronidazole are the same drug. Any advice appreciated! |

Well my first thought would be to get him off the diet canned food since
this all started at the same time and get him on homecooked to see if you can get this under control. I would also think about getting my water tested. My mother had very similar gastric problems for almost two years and it turned out the well water had bacteria in it. No one else in the family was affected only her because her immune system was compromised. Celeste wrote in message oups.com... Rocky said in rec.pets.dogs.health:
As far as I know, Flagyl is a trade name for generic Metronidazole. Whoops! I just noticed this at the bottom of your post: I give the dog psyllium in his food to bulk him up. Also, Flagyl & Metronidazole are the same drug. BTW, the Panacur "double course" advice was originally given to me by the vet who developed the giardia vaccine (something else you may want to look into). -- --Matt. Rocky's a Dog. |

wrote in message oups.com... A few months ago my dog developed sloppy poo and would go maybe 3 time in one hour. The vet said he might have gastroenteritis ...........did you take in a fresh stool sample to be tested? ..She put him (an eleven year old Collie) on antibiotics - Metronidazole 400mg - for 3 weeks. This worked really well but 5 days after the course ended it was back to square one. .........that's because the antibiotics wiped out all the good bacteria in the gut. It is not unusual to get diarrhea after a long course of antibiotics. Get some capsules of probiotics and give it 2X a day for a month. .. Has anyone an idea what to do? Bear in mind : around the time the gastric problem started the dog started taking diet canned food (Waltham Low Digestive diet) and has lost weight.Could this food cause the problem? .........could very well be. Also, sometimes the dog gets to the cats poo...and eats it!! Could this be the problem? ........maybe. What kind of litter do you use? I'd try to block off the litter box so this is no longer an issue. I give the dog psyllium in his food to bulk him up. ............Psyllium can cause loose stools or plug him up if the amount is varied. I'd stop using this right now until you get the problem under control. I'm sure there's plenty of fiber in that canned diet food. buglady take out the dog before replying |

Thanks for all your advice...
The vet does think the dog has intestinal parasites all right but he has not been tested.I will check up on Giardia as its a new one to me. The probiotics are worth a try.The psyllium does seem to help, his poo is less sloopy when he is on it.I will also ask about Panacur. I think after this dose of Flagyl it will be back to square one.The vet has mentioned a blood test too although here they are about 85 euro but I don't mind paying that. Thanks again! |
