Default Dogs hanging out of car window

I heard that it was not a good idea for a dog's head to hang outside the car
window, because of the particles in the air their corneas will eventually be
scared. Is that true or is it a myth?

Thanks

Tom

I don't think corneas have fears ;-D

All sorts of debris can cause damage to eyes, ears and noses. Dogs
should ride safely restrained in the back seat/cargo area of a car,
with heads inside.

Would you drive along with YOUR head hanging out the window? Probably
not. Your dog shouldn't be doing it either. Scared Corneas are the
least of your worries (what exactly would scare the cornea???)

........picture a bug flying along at .01 MPH meeting your dog's eye moving
at 50 MPH.

I often think why do some motorcylists wear open faced helmuts...especially
on the highway? I wear a closed faced helmut (always have) because of the
amount of bugs that you can get dinged with. You should hear the loud smack
on the visor when a bee hits you which is pretty well constantly. One guy
got hit in the nose so hard while wearing a open faced helmut that it broke
it. So you can imagine what could happen to a dog hanging out the window.

Another good reason is that they can jump or fall out and get killed (mine
did not, thank God). When I got my Westie puppy I let him bite the air out
my window. I thought it was cute and it seemed to be what he wanted to do.
I had the leash on him and held it pretty close. But I got distracted while
I was turning and downshifting. Next thing I know he's out the window and I
got just the end of the leash. I was scared to death he got under the wheel
- the car was still rolling. He didn't. Windows stay closed. End of story.

something else about windows and dogs riding free or even belted.
Turn off the back seat (where the dogs should be riding - airbags are
dangerous for children who are much larger after all) power window
controls. a dog stepping on the controls to open can fall/jump out, a
dog stepping on the controls to close can suffocate or strangle.

Car crates rule (and contain mud, water, etc).
