Default SHOW QUALITY DACHSHUNDS

The Dachshund had a lively, upbeat pesonality--spunky, curious and
friendly. These traits remain from the Dachshund's original job:
"Dachshund" means "badger dog" in German, and he was created to hunt
down badgers. The Dachshund is a member of the Hound Group and was
first recognized by the AKC in 1885.

Do you want a healthy dog? Then look for a breeder who uses knowledge and
caring to best improve the chances of a healthy dog. Anyone looking for
well bred dogs of any breed would do well to learn what questions to ask
the breeder, before contacting the breeder. There are plenty of breeders
who are more interested in their ego, and your money, than in the health
and welfare of the dogs.

Does that breeder test for PRA? for structural problems? for thyroid
problems? Is that breeder contributing to the knowledge pool by
submitting test results to OFA? Is the breeder open enough about both the
good AND the bad to authorize OFA to publish the results without regard to
whether the dog tests clear? Learning how to properly search the database
is a very worthwhile investment of your time.

Don't be impressed by claims of "show quality" or "show prospect." When
applied to the puppies is merely means (or should mean) that there are no
obvious disqualifying faults. It does not mean the puppy is healthy, nor
does it mean the parents are healthy. And the proof of "show quality" is
*showing* which means actual competition, not a fun match. In many breeds
puppy results don't reflect adult results.

In selecting that puppy it is very important to know what that "Champion"
really means, and what it does not mean, with regard to the health and
temperament of the "Champion" and its get.
