Default glucosamine for dogs?

Do anyone believe glucosamine might help a 6year old male dachshund who has alreay had 2 "disc" surgeries. Might this help his bones.? He is overweight and should lose about 10 lbs too.

Glucosamine is commonly given to dogs and many foods even contain some
amount of it. Do check with your vet first to get the proper initial
load dose and subsequent maintenance dose.

Glucosamine may or may not help the dog. Losing weight will definitely
help him. His weight is in your hands. If you put him on a routine
feeding schedule, measure his food and limit his treats he *will* lose
weight. It's not like he can drive himself up to Taco Bell or Krispy
Kreme when he gets peckish.

I believe glucosamine (and chondroitin) are used to prevent or control
arthritis, so if your vet has prescribed it, he's concerned about your
dog becoming arthritic in his spine.

My ancient kitty (now 20 years old) who has genetic heart disease and
was expected to die 6 years ago, has severe spinal and hip arthritis.
When one of my dogs was diagnosed with a "trick knee", the vet
prescribed ARTHRIMAXX which contains high concentrations of glucosamine,
chondroitin, ester-C, and MSM. Since kitty partakes of the doggie bowl
every day, she seemed to IMPROVE since getting small quantities of the
Arthrimaxx. She hadn't jumped onto furniture for nearly a year, but is
doing so now.

You can do no harm by giving the supplement to your dog, but keep in
mind that it takes 4-8 weeks (I think) for any results, so you must keep
it up and you'll be in it for the long haul.

Also, the pet store supplements don't contain sufficient quantities of
any of these ingredients according to my vet. When I compared products,
the Arthrimaxx had 3 to 4x the amount quoted in OTC labels, and also
none of the OTC products had all 4 ingredients. Bottom line, the
Arthrimaxx was most cost effective if you took its ingredients into
consideration.

Hope this helps.

A specially designed dog Glucosamine may be found he

http://www.healthspan.co.uk/shop/product.aspx?id=FXJD from VetVits.

There are also other pet vitamins and nutritional supplements too.

Hope this helps.
