Default Petfinder starting to exclude users

Well, it took weeks and way too many repeated messages to get the
message across that Petfinder's new use of links like
a href="#" ...
excludes some users (with JavaScript disabled or unavailable). I
finally received verification that Petfinder has done this
deliberately and will not simply put the URLs in the anchors (even
in addition to the JavaScript).

I've been recommending Petfinder to a lot of people and I've always
felt a little hesitant about putting so much power for good in the
hands of a commercial entity who is unlikely to always act in the
interests of the community. It's obvious now that it's dangerous
to rely on Petfinder to "do the right thing" even in such a
trivially simple case.

So...I'm back to thinking about how the rescue community might
better serve itself online. Over the past few months I've become
more involved "hands on" with rescue and I know that there are lots
of people spending amazing resources on it. They deserve some good
tools to facilitate their work. I want them to own those tools so
that they're always available and able to be modified to suit.

If you're interested in working on some tools, please contact me.
I'm willing to provide computing resources, funding and my own
ideas. I might be able to involve some students too.

Thank you.

I've noticed Petfinder isn't allowing outbound links in their forum
also. It's part of their Terms and Conditions... They also have a
binding agreement with their sponsors (Petco, etc) that keeps those
sponsors from also helping other rescue organizations.

My girlfriend and I started a site for dog people that features an
Adopt a Dog section. We have around 800 rescue groups and several
thousand dogs listed. Feel free to try it out.

Petfinder is still the most popular place for rescue groups to post
their adoptable dogs and to share info, but they aren't the only option
available.
