Default low shedding breeds for allergy sufferers

I have dog allergies so I own a toy poodle. When I brush his hair, my eyes
water and I sneeze. I would love to own another dog in the future and
possibly another breed but I have my concerns. Is there any breed of dog
(under 40 pounds) that I might be able to own without being miserable? I
know the best test would be to interact with different breeds to see how I
am but I thought I get an idea of some breed possibilities before I do that.
Does anyone with allergies have shedding dogs? Do you need to be on allergy
meds? Is it ok most of the time or does the dog bother the allergies all of
the time? Thanks for any input.

there was just a thread on rpdb about this. I take a lot of
medication. Some dogs still bother me, others do not, and sometimes
the dogs who usually don't, do. I have shedding dogs. Shedding is
not the issue when it comes to allergies.

Westie works for me. I raised one. We also had had a cocker and
mixed short hair hound something prior to her. After I got
divorced from my Westie, I got a hound mix at a shelter. Great
dog. My eyes started itching and swelling. Never figured it
could be the dog. It was. He shed a lot and licked a lot (some
say it can be something in the saliva). Taking him back to the
shelter was one of the worst days of my life.
So, when it was time again I realized I better go with what
works and got a pure-bred Westie puppy. No problem.
That's what worked for me.

my mom's friend's dog is a westie, maybe I'll have to experiment and see how
I do around her.
