I have a male yorkie and I love him dearly. He's 1 1/2 but I am still
having trouble getting him to go potty outside. If we don't watch him,
he'll use the carpet. I have heard that yorkies are hard to housetrain.
Does anyone else have this problem? Other than that, he's great --
affectionate, doesn't chew, loves people and other pets.

So watch him. :-) Go back to treating him like a puppy, and start the
housebreaking all over again. Keep him on a leash so he can't sneak
off, or put him in a crate when you can't give him 100% focus.

It's not true, they housebreak just like any other dog. The problem is
that their accidents are so small, people don't notice them all. It's a
people problem, not a breed problem. And it wouldn't hurt to have him
checked out by a vet to rule out health issues.

I have a 16 month yorkie, and at first we had the same problem. He would
sit by the front door and we wouldn't notice him and all of the sudden we
would smell something. Everytime he went in the house it was because of
us. You still have to dicipline them. We make a big fuss over our little
guy, and give him treats everytime he goes outside. Now he will bark at
the door when he has to go. It is not easy to do, and it takes a long
time. If you stick with it I promise it will work. He never has full run
of the house either. If we are on the first floor of our house, he is not
allowed to be upstairs. The only time he is allowed upstairs is if we are
there. We used to crate him when we were a sleep or not home. Now we put a
baby gate up and keep him in the kitchen. This gives him a little more
freedom, but not too much. If he does go on the floor it is on tile and
not the carpet. I hope you find a my techniques useful.
