If you're thinking about getting a flu shot...

Be careful out there. Unfortunately there's no absolutely safe anything any more. In this case, with a worldwide outbreak of bird flu imminent and flu viruses increasing in virulence in general, getting the flu vaccine is pretty darn important. |

The only way you can get bird flu is from contact with an infected bird. The virus would have to mutate before it would be transmissable from person to person. Noone knows what they odds on that are, or if, once the virus mutated, it would even be as deadly. If you are a healthy adult, there is no reason to get a flu shot. In fact, I would argue that it would indeed be selfish to get a flu shot. The flu is not deadly to healthy adults, but it can be quite fatal to the elderly, the very young, or the immune suppressed. Flu shots are in limited supply. Save them for those that really need them. I would feel guilty as hell getting a flu shot knowing that someone else that really needed it, might not get one because I did. If you still feel that you must have some flu protection, get the nasal spray vaccine. It is not in short supply, and the elderly, young and immune suppressed can't take it. |

One of the lessons of Y2K is some level of penetration into the popular culture is probably necessary in order to motivate people to work to prevent a basically kind of geeky event. It's not that it was necessary for people starting to worry about planes dropping out of the sky, but rather that the level of publicity required to motivate people to do some unbelievably tedious work inevitably led to distortions about planes dropping out of the sky. Same thing with the bird flu, I think. I'm glad it's getting press and I'm glad that the developed world is starting to prepare against the possibility of a pandemic at some point in the future. I don't get flu shots myself - not because I believe the anti-science hysterics and Lysenkoists on the right, but because I'm in my 40s and above-average healthy and I think the risk of getting deathly ill from the flu is pretty minimal in my case. I'm insisting on my mother getting one, though. -- Melinda Shore - Software longa, hardware brevis - Prouder than ever to be a member of the reality-based community |

Also we have to keep it on hand for new admits. It does make me feel more strongly about healthy adults not getting something that others need more. The media certainly doesn't help the situation. Like I said any healthy adults that do feel they need flu prevention should ask their doctors about the nasal spray. People at risk can't take it because it is based on a live virus, but it's fine for the rest of us. |

The media certainly doesn't help the situation. On balance, I think that's impossible to know. I have friends who turned their homes into survivalist compounds in fear of Y2K, but I also know of a lot of serious bugs that were caught and fixed in an awful lot of software. -- Melinda Shore - Software longa, hardware brevis - Prouder than ever to be a member of the reality-based community |
