OT--My ISP has dumped usenet :-(
Rogers has decided that usenet and newsgroups are antiquated technology
and has stopped supporting them grumble They suggested that customers who wished to continue to use usenet subscribe to Giganews: which wants money every month grumble, gripe I'm posting this on Google, which required me to register but didn't ask for money, but the format which the messages show isn't the greatest (ok, so really it's just different, but I *liked* my old format) grumble, gripe, grumble, grumble Any better services than Google that y'all would recommend? If not, can anyone tell me how to filter "undesirables" here? TIA Marie |

No longer free, but not expensive: http://news.individual.net/ Yeah, I think when I signed on the 10 euro fee was under $13 USD. Per year. And you do NOT want to have to use Google. It's a pain for any group but AFAIC it makes this group completely unreadable. I think there are a bunch of people who use newsguy and like it well enough. I thought that one was still free but when I looked at the site a couple of days ago that didn't appear to be true any longer. ~~Judy |

just did a Google search on the terms
free usenet server and got 4,800,000 hits. I'm surprised that you're not aware that most of the "free" servers you find that way are not intended for use by the public; they're only "free" because somebody has figured out a way to illegally access them. |

I'm perfectly aware of that. However, 1) the point remains that if you're looking for a legitimate free service they're easy to find, and 2) I think the word you're looking for is "improperly" or "inappropriately," not "illegally." Whether or not it's illegal depends on jurisdiction, and to my knowledge it's not actually illegal to use an unsecured NNTP server (or mail server, etc.) anywhere in the US or Canada. -- Melinda Shore - Software longa, hardware brevis - Prouder than ever to be a member of the reality-based community. |

I'm perfectly aware of that.
Then I'm even more surprised that it didn't occur to you to caution someone about it when advising them to go search Google for free servers. Not all of those lists of "free servers" make it easy to tell which are legitimate and which aren't - and some of the owners of said servers can get very nasty if they figure out they're being accessed. For example, back-tracking unwanted intruders and hacking their computers. Simply telling someone "go look for free servers" without warning them of the possible risks is *not* a good idea IMO. |
