I have read all your postings from my first post to my " tail between
my legs post"
First I want to say I had no idea what kind of forum I was posting on.
There are so many dog forums on the internet, I have no idea how I even
ended up in this one.
I guess I entered an unknown world to me
I have been to shows, I love attending them and watching in awe the
majestic grace of the German Shepherd in the ring.
I have taken back dogs back in the past from owners who could not keep
them and found them homes, also have knowledge of animal rescue as a
family member of mine has worked for years through a local organization
and house's the animals and finds them suitable homes who would other
wise be put to sleep.
I found my Heidelberg Female on the internet through researching past
pedigree papers.
Also have purchased G/S through adds in the paper and found very
ethical breeder's.
This was MY ORIGINAL POSTING.
AS I MENTIONED IN THE BEGINNING OF THIS POST I LANDED IN AN UNKNOWN
WORLD IN THIS FORUM.
I would have never disrespected had I known, or used some of the terms
I did.
Obviously I went back into the postings, forum and realised I put my
foot in my mouth
after reading this forum and then did appologise......
May I join your group and begin to learn further?
You all I am sure seemed to have a good time with my post and I am sure
it made you all have a good chuckle or think where did this one come
from
I do have some serious questions
Am I welcomed?

BettyJean,
This usenet, unmoderated, and if you're tough enough it is a good place
to learn.

This isn't a forum. It's usenet news. Unmoderated, and around longer
than most email groups (I'm not sure of the heirarchy of usenet to
forums/groups with the evolution of the internet, but I believe usenet
was here first).

I've been monitoring the various rec.pets.dogs groups since 1994, but
there are many regular posters who have been here longer than I have.

Yes, we can be a very tough crowd. Yes, you can learn here. But we don't
tend to sugar coat things and we are seldom politically correct. Those
of us left here who have been here lo these many years are far more
concerned about dogs than we are about the people who breed them. That's
not to say we are animal rights activists or anti-breeding. Far from it.
We just think that purposely creating new dog lives is something that
should be taken far more seriously than most people, including you, seem
to take it.

If you are breeding dogs in this world where millions of unwanted dogs
are put down each year, you better think about it right hard. You better
be thinking that what you produce is really WORTH producing. "Nice Pets"
is not enough of a justification to breed. It should be the base of your
breeding program, the foundation, but not the house that rises on that
foundation.

German Shepherds are a breed that has had a particularly hard time. Most
of us feel that the American Show Shepherd is a *******ation of what the
GSD is supposed to be. Slinky, hock-walking, spooks. I believe one AKC
Champion GSD has managed to get a schutzhund title in the past 20 years.
That is NOT a good advertisement for temperament in the breed, yet
you're producing what you call "show lines." You're also producing them
without actually knowing what you mean, because you've never shown dogs
yourself.

I feel, based on your posts so far, that you are breeding with good
intentions but a tremendous amount of ignorance. You'll get a lot of
advice here. Some of it will be excellent, some of it will be from the
resident nutter and should be trashed right away. But unlike many, many
who have come before you, you do seem to be willing to learn. That makes
you almost unique. Most people just march off in a self-righteous huff.

Truthfully, your very best educational resource for German Shepherds
really isn't this group. We can give you tons of solid advice on
breeding in general. But I think you need to get to know your own breed
a bit better. You should find a schutzhund club near you and go hang out
and talk to people. Most are quite friendly. If they're not, dump them
and go to another one. You should also join the breed club, and go to
www.leerburg.com and www.germanshepherddogs.com.

There were mailing lists before there was Usenet, but what
we now call "the Internet" didn't exist at the time the
first Usenet experiments took place. In fact, Usenet was
not "internet" technology - it was a bunch of computers
calling each other up on the telephone and sending files.

i'm not sure the term "forum" has a specific designation in this
context. they're all generically fora: mail lists, newsgroups,
Google's whateverthehellitis groups, etc.

BettyJean:

While this newsgroup can give answers to some questions, for your
purposes breed German Shepherds, you would be much better served to
seek out groups that are specifically oriented to
breeding/owning/training GSDs.

My suggestion is to search on yahoo groups for German Shepherds, and
additionally join either a regional GSD club and/or your national GSD
club for starters (if you are not already a member).

As well, seek out and find someone who will mentor you - someone well
respected in the GSD community....as they are the experts in their
chosen breed.

You have a choice here - you can simply breed GSDs, or you can strive to
breed the best GSDs.

Deb

Hello Betty,

There is a very good, moderated board, specifically geared toward GSDs -
please visit www.germanshepherds.com - Once you get to the web site, click
the icon for "forums" and you will see threads on a great number of topics.

If you keep an open mind, and are willing to learn, it is a wonderful source
of information.

There are areas devoted to breeding, Schutzhund, health, seniors, puppies,
training - you name it and it probably has a category.

I also invite you to visit the areas devoted to Urgent Rescue of GSDs and
Rescue of GSDs. After a couple of visits, you will realize why we are so
passionate about our cause.

Yours in GSDs and rescue,

Lea

Pretty much anyone who has an open mind is welcome. Most of us got an
abrupt awakening, but I wouldn't change the knoweldge I've gained for
anything. That's why I'm still here. And while I generally prefer the
diplomatic approach over the years I've learned that there is great value
in passion. It tends to get people's attention.
