Default Mini Schnauzer is weird

My miniature schnauzer (almost a year old now) has been generally
apartment-friendly. Except for the occasional "accident", she really
hasn't been too damaging to the facilities.

Until now...

For some reason, whenever we leave her alone in the house for a few
hours, she finds it necessary to pull up the edge of the carpet, grab
hold of the nail board, and bite at it until she breaks off a chunk.
Then she'll take the chunk and will proceed to chew on it.

I realize that she may not be the brightest pup in the litter, but
wouldn't the rusty nails in the board hurt her? I haven't seen any
signs of blood when I find the nail board pieces...?

She has at least ten chewy toys scattered throughout the house, so it's
not a lack of things to chew on.

I've been considering pouring some cayenne pepper under the carpet to
hopefully keep her from "digging" there... does this work, or is there
a better solution? That 'no chew' spray at the pet store stinks so I
don't really want to use that.

Any ideas or suggestions?
