Default Keeping an Eye on Dog Laws?

Are you keeping an eye on dog laws?

From the latest digest to hit my inbox are these points from a proposed
ordninance:

* Define anyone who sells or gives away an animal as an "animal
dealer" and require purchase of both an animal dealer license and a
kennel license.
* Require persons with more than 5 altered animals to purchase a
kennel license.
* Further require purchase of a kennel license by residents with
less than 5 animals if they breed, show, or compete in field or
obedience trials.
* Establish a $5 "show dog" fee for every dog participating in
conformation that can not show proof of license in another jurisdiction.

The level of disinterest in fighting such proposals is disheartening. I
figure that it is going to get a lot worse before people start to wake up.

None of that happening around here, Diane.

California, though, is capable of just about any kind of mischievous,
nonsense.

Which is pretty much why I don't live there anymore.

Besides, someone has to pay for the health care, education, etc., of
all those illegal immigrants...

That one was from Louiseville, Kentucky.

For Missouri communities with breed specific proposals or study session on
possible breed banning are as follows:

Jennings, Springfield, Bellfontaine and Oak Grove.

Then there is Vemont and ear cropping

Not an issue that is important to me as such, but the impliations seem to
be important.

And there is also the federal PAWS legislation that Santorum is pushing.
AKC is supporting it but AFAICS most breed clubs are fighting it tooth and
nail.

There are so many ways that Santorum does Pennsylvania proud
that it's hard to keep track.

Sleddog Central has a legislative alerts page
(http://www.sleddogcentral.com/legislative/alerts.htm) .
It's not that current, but it does include a pointer to
http://nopaws.org.

And he's up for re-election. Dare we hope?

Latest word on the AMSC list is that Santorum has completed a rewrite, was
given to the Dept. of Ag last week and will be made public in a few days.

And the Vermont no-crop bill has passed their Senate and is headed for the
House.

It's looking good! Sort-of tying in to the original theme,
some people who haven't been paying attention to what's been
going on in Washington the past few years are all, like,
"Hey, that's not *fair*!" over Santorum having closed
anti-PAWS testimony out of the PAWS Senate hearing. I doubt
that particular piece of miscreant behavior will have much
of an impact on the election, though, but I think he's
pretty much shot himself in the foot on a bunch of other
things.

The Yahoo group BSL-UPDTES is very up to date. Today's mail re BSL is
this Missouri bill HB1686 Requires all pit bull owners to obtain a state
permit and imposes
penalties for failure to leash and muzzle a pit bull.

Sponsor: Chappelle-Nadal, Maria (72) Proposed Effective Date: 08/28/2006
CoSponsor: McGhee, Mike (122) ..........etal.

From Virginia
On February 7, 2006 the House of Delegates passed HB339 by a vote of 71-
28-1. This bill requires that every veterinarian in Virginia provide
county and city treasurers with client-owner names, addresses, dog age, sex,
color, primary breed, secondary breed and the breeding status of each and every
canine given a rabies vaccination. Treasurers are then required to bill
dog owners for license fees, based on the data supplied by those
veterinarians. Information in this dog owner database is to be shared with
other counties and is subject to general release and distribution under
the Freedom of Information Act. Any commercial entity may acquire
information on you and your dogs, their number, age, breed, whether they
are intact or sterilize, et al.

Don't like it, but doesn't seem a radical departure from current practice
around here. Which is EXACTLY how the slippery slope works. Get people
comfortable with one step, go on to the next. ALL laws are slippery slopes
which is why I'm in the fewer laws the better crowd. But some laws are
useful, helpful etc. Just got to keep on top of them.

Well, I hope there are no boxer owners in Vermont that want their boxer's
ears done.
