I finally got around to getting some snaps of Slick.
http://www.employees.org/~shore/slick.jpg
is FULL FRONTAL DOG showing his bi-eyes and his invariably
smiley face (those are Emmett and Saber in the background),
and
http://www.employees.org/~shore/slickandeclipse.jpg
are, um, Slick and Eclipse having a romp.

He's settling in well - he's a good, honest, hardworking dog
who can be a little rude while hooking up (we're working on
that) and who shows substantial interest in leading. I can
really feel the difference in power with him on the team.

He house-trained very easily and is a really smart dog who
basically taught himself to sit for meals and treats by
imitating the others. He's so mellow around the house that
I was starting to doubt that he's really a Siberian Husky,
and then he chewed up my heart rate monitor and put those
doubts to rest. He learned very quickly what's an
appropriate chew object and what's not, though. In spite of
his mellowness inside the house he's a romping machine out
in the yard and can zoomie like not too many dogs can
zoomie.

I have to say, though, that seven dogs loose in the house is
a lot of dogs. Part of what keeps the situation manageable
is that the dogs are really well-behaved and they know
what's expected of them at mealtimes, bedtime, and so on,
and when you add a dog into the mix who doesn't know the
drill it can be disruptive beyond simply having another
mouth to feed, dog to exercise, etc. Fortunately he's
picked stuff up really fast, but those first couple of days
seemed pretty chaotic.

I dream about having seven dogs loose in the house.

I thought about you when I wrote that. For me, once you get
past about four the question of training and having the
routine down tends to dominate the pure numbers thing, and
it was pretty disruptive bringing a new dog into the house
because he didn't know what was expected of him at
mealtimes, etc. My impression is that you've got a stream
of new dogs entering the house and so you're having to deal
with that all the time, which is impressive.

Not a stream, exactly, and although we're placing dogs again (took
2005 off) we're not fostering ourselves until our permanent numbers
are down. Well, we do have a foster dog, but not intentionally, and
she's not cat-friendly so she cannot come into the house, period.
Between the sheer numbers and the medications and Anna having to be
hand-fed 30 minutes after her Reglan, mealtimes are kind of scary here
even though everybody knows what to do and where to go. Now with a
blind dog, we really need to wait a bit before having fosters in the
house. We did have a foster dog overnight a couple of weeks ago, and
other than his being so close to Zeke's color that both DH and I
called him Zeke at least once (this after 6 months), you wouldn't have
known there was a new dog around. I love that about greyhounds.

Oh my! He looks happy and full of fun! I find that picture quite
charming.

Btw, it is seriously snowing here in Virginia -- I hear NY's going to get
it later.

Oh I love his face. He makes me think of Ted - a blue merle smooth collie
with a split face and bi-eyes. One sweet brown eye in the blue and one
mischievous blue eye in the black. I called Ted "Psycho-Puppy Qu'est Que
C'est"

Slick sounds adorable. Congratulations.

He's a mellow fellow for the most part, but when he's
outside with the others he's extremely playful.

The storm is going up the coast. We're too far inland to be
hit by this one, unfortunately. Enjoy it, though. I
understand that eastern Virginia is going to get a
substantial dumping.
