I have a one year old Black Lab/Rotty mixed, and I have had her since she
was 4 weeks old. When she turned about 6 monthes old she turned mean
towards people. She is fine with eveyone living in our home, but in order
for us to invite anyone over we either have to muzzle her, put her lash on
her and keep her by our side at all times or lock her up. The minute she
sees someone she does not know enter my home she tries to bite and jump at
them. The hair on her back rarely ever stands up and she shacks all over
with fear, but shows them aggression so no one will come near her. How can
I get her to the point that she will see that o one is going to hurt her
or us?

I wouldn't even attempt to try - I would strongly advise you to speak to
your vet about being referred to a good pet behaviour councillor or trainer
(please remember that anyone can *call* themselves a trainer or
behaviourist, so look for those that will only work from a vet referral or
have completed both academic and practical courses - such as an apdt member
(www.apdt.com))

In the UK most pet insurance policies would cover this cost.

I sincerely hope that you can be helped through this and that we hear a
positive outcome.

4 weeks? A huge problem right there. Wayyyyyy too young.

her?

You can consult an in-person behavior counselor and get a full
evaluation. She needs training, socialization and exposure.

I would also point out that your family have caused this problem.

I bet you guys just loved this little puppy with all your might. Carried
her around and really fussed. Am I right?
Then you kept her home away from the world no puppy classes no obedience
classes? Getting warm?

Now your dog act like a confused animal. You have raised her position in
your pack, then she automatically protects you when danger appears and you
want an answer on the internet?

Consult a specialist on your area. Listen to them and learn from them.

I have spoken with my vet and they directed me to a dog trainer. I was told
that I need to socalize her more and get her fixed. She is going next week
to be spayed and I keep working with her on socalizing. The trainer also
told me not to lock her up when we get visitors, just to muzzle her and
put her leash on her so I can control her, then when she calms down have
our visitors pet her, and with the information she gave me on the phone
and sent me in the mail I will probably be able to help her without
spending a fortune on a dog trainer. She is not my first dog. I have
taught her good behavior she does have and now it is my job to get her
under control. I agree that she was too young when we got her, but I
could not let this poor dog go to the pound. Her behavior started when we
took her with on vacation to my sister's, and my brother in-law teased her
the whole time. I am determand to turn her behavior around.

i have finally had a break through. I did not want to use a shock collar

muzzle and the leash is to learn to show the dog who is the boss with the

more scared then mean, so she reacts as a mean dog so people don't go ear
her. From the time I got her I always had her around people, but after she
turned I had no choice but to keep her away. Yes, I do realize that that
was a mistake, and the only thing I can do now is keep working to correct
the behavior. I am following what the dog trainer said and I did contact a
different one and they stated the same thing. I was told where to go to
socalize her where people will understand. So you people that have no
advice to give than don't waist your time typing a message, and if there
is anyone out there that are having problems with you dog keep working
with your dog and look for advice from noncritical people that probably
know nothing about training a dog. I listened to the trainer I spoke to
and I am seeing results, but her training has just started.
