Default barking problem

We just took in two rescues. One is an old lab mix and the other a Lhasa that lived with a homeless man who gave him so he could get medical care. That's a tragedy in itself but the problem is both dogs have separation anxiety. The lab was abandoned soyou can appreciate the issues. We need to work with him using a crate. The little guy I'm not sure how to deal with. My office is in the home, upstairs. When I go up he starts barking. I haven't started working on this yet and would like to hear what has worked before I start.
