Neutered & "Tumor" removed
Hello everybody,
I have had my rottweiler for 6 years in April. His name is Max. I took Max to the vet this morning to get a tumor removed from his mouth. Max doesn't like the Vet, but he usually isn't overly aggressive. Today we made the mistake of crowding him a little too much and he snipped my sisters hand. We were all amazed because Max has never bitten before. After that I decided to have Max neutered, hoping it will calm his aggression down some. Max had a small "tumor" removed from his mouth and had the castration performed. He, of course, was heavily sedated during all of this. The tumor has been sent off for testing to make sure Max doesn't have cancer. I am not sure what anesthetic was used on Max. He was very wore out until tonight. The anesthetic has begun to wear off, but Max is still apparently in pain. I am worried because he has thrown up twice since I have gotten him home. Once about 4 hours after he got home and now about 9.5 hours after he has been home. Is this normal for a canine who has been under an anesthetic? He has been put to sleep before to have a tooth removed and did not get sick to his stomach afterwards. Thanks in advance, I am worried about Max. I am hoping for positive replies from you all tonight and from the vet in the morning. Shock |

They didn't stitch Max's area, they simply burned the growth off and burned the area closed. Right now I am just trying to get his stomach back to normal. He is having a hard time keeping down water and he hasn't touched food yet. Any recommends? I want to get him back to health, I hate seeing my "little buddy" feel bad. Good news though, he is full of energy this morning and the stitches from the castration seem to have been done properly and show no signs of infection. Shock |

Clearing the drugs from the system is an individual response, but in an older dog, it takes MUCH longer. He'll also be groggy from the pain medication. You need to really watch him and keep that activity level down, as the scrotum is just an empty sac to fill up with blood if the dog is too active and tears a bleeder. If he is in pain, and there is no real way to tell until the anesthesia wears off, then it's most likely due to the mouth surgery, not the neuter. I'd approach your vet about using a topical numbing agent for the mouth to see if that helps. Benadryl can also act as a sedative and allow the dog to sleep while the pain dissapates. Again, talk with your vet about using this approach. |

I am having trouble getting Max to leave the stitches alone. He is wanting to lick them constantly and I am afraid he is going to take them out. Is there much I can do about this or should I just let him be? I am worried that if the stitches come out too early the wound will not heal. Am I being over paranoid? BTW, the vet told me that Max will take care of the stitches himself. In my haste I didn't ask him what he meant. Any tips. Could these be dissolvable or will Max actually pull them out with his teeth? Shock |
