Finding out bladder stone type
Hi all,
Our 11-year old male springer spaniel was diagnosed a 1/2" bladder stone some months ago. It was asymptomatic (it came out in a sonogram for a different problem) and a urine test didn't tell what type it was. Nevertheless, the vet recommended one of the special diets to try to dissolve it and if it didn't work then try the other one (as I understand it there are two main types), which we found very odd and decided not to do since he's had food alergy problems and it took time to find a dog food he could eat safely. Then she suggested another sonogram after a few months, which was done last Tuesday. The stone is of course still there (roughly same size) and he has mild bladder infection symptoms now. This time she recommends surgery without even doing a urine test to try to find out which type it is and whether it could be dissolved with a special diet. I'm surprised she wouldn't even do a urine test (if only to check the infection), is it because it was negative first time round and that means it will be this time? Isn't it worth trying just in case surgery can be avoided? How likely is it that this will be the case? Many thanks in advance, Carlos |

Finding out bladder stone type
I'm surprised she wouldn't even do a urine test (if only to check the
infection), is it because it was negative first time round and that means it will be this time? Isn't it worth trying just in case surgery can be avoided? How likely is it that this will be the case? It's likely the same stone that was there before so why repeat the test expecially if you wouldn't change the diet. It's obviously causing irritation to the bladder wall and she recommends removing it. If you're concerned and feel as though you're not getting your questions answered, get a second opinion. BTW, I understand the diet issue. We had a dog that was suffering for years until we found a diet that worked (Z/D). When other problems pop up, it's hard to decide which is the worse of 2 evils. -Sharon |
