Default Are these symptoms familiar?

Hi

I am new here and I am seeking anyone whose dog has experienced similar
symptoms to my dog.

Last Saturday morning I dropt Sandy off at the kennels where he has
stayed several times before. I was going away for a few days. He seemed
in perfect health. On my return Wednesday afternoon the kennel owner
said that Sandy was unwell; had been straining to defecate and that now
he wasn't able to walk. When I saw Sandy I was shocked. He was almost in
a state of collapse; like a rag doll. I placed him straight in the car
and drove to the vet. Because Sandy had been operated on for a perineal
hernia last year the vet and I suspected that this had returned. The vet
cleared his rectum but in fact didn't find much material in there.
However as soon as she stopped Sandy started to urinate, huge amounts
that also contained blood. he was extremely weak and couldn't support
himself on his hind legs. He was admitted to the clinic and placed on a
drip.

He is greatly improved and just this evening has eaten a small amount
for the first time. He is also drinking on his own. An array of tests
have shown nothing abnormal apart for his kidney function tests that are
continuing to get worse despite the overall improvement in his
condition. He still cannot support himself on his hind legs but can move
them ok. he can wag his tale as well. There may be pain in the area
because I was gently rubbing the area tonight and he was growling. He
continues to be on a drip and is receiving antibiotics and steroid
injections. He is also urine incontinent.

So my question is, does the above ring any bells with others experiences?

Thanks for reading this

And they had not contacted your vet or a vet. What the hell kind of
kennel is that?

..........any urinalysis results? Ultrasound or X-rays for kidney stone?
TEst for lepto? If the dog is on antibiotics anyway, ask them for the
appropriate ones for leptospirosis as test results take a while to come
back. Better safe than sorry. I'd also get an ACTH stimulation test for
Addison's - IMMEDIATELY.....even in the Na:K results were normal.

Hope they can figure out what's going on...

x-rays and ultrasound have been done and also the test for lepto has
been sent away...I think they are treating for that anyway because the
test takes 12 days to come back. Addsions hasn't been mentioned..I will
talk to the vet tomorrow

How about meningitis? It sounds a little like my friend's dog. The
following is an email from her informing us of what was going on:

He had some body pain on the weekend and was walking a bit shaky in the back

end so I thought he needed to go in for a chiropractic adjustment. I took

him in early on the holiday Monday and he seemed to have some groin

tightness and his pelvis was slightly rotated. After adjustment, he relaxed

a bit and the chiro said it would take him a day or so to get back to

normal.

The next day I was away all day and when I came home late in the evening I

found him very lethargic and slow to move and was also told he had pooped

and peed in the house which is something he has never done in his life, not

even as a puppy. I knew something was terribly wrong. I had resolved to take

him into the vet first thing on Wednesday morning and see what was

happening.

During the night, he was very restless and his ability to get up and turn

around was becoming more and more impaired with each hour. By 5:30 in the

morning he could not stand on all 4 legs to go out and pee and collapsed in

my arms. He was rushed to the animal critical care unit and was

assessed by the neurologist there who gave me several different ideas as to

why he was so sick. The 4 main ones were meningitis, an abscess at the base

of the brain, a tumour on his spine or lymphoma. We received the results of

all the tests back yesterday afternoon and I received the best news

yet......it was meningitis. Now the doctor had to figure out if it was

bacterial or viral. Bacterial can be treated with antibiotics but nothing

can be done with viral except relying on the patient's own immune system for

recovery.

I spoke with the doctor this morning and while he had made good progress

yesterday due in part to the steriod shot he received, he's made no progress

since and I'm now beginning to worry all over again as to what will happen.

Also:

There are reports in the paper of several dogs coming down with this in the
past few months out here (BC). The disease seems to have moved over from
Vancouver Island. There is also a serious fungal meningitis found in Santa
Cruz, CA which is close to where we were a few weeks ago at the Orange Coast
Specialty.

Hope this can give another direction to go in.

René

Thanks. I will mention this to the vet but I would have thought he would
have been more generally ill. I am becoming more convinced that this
isn't a disease process but an injury. The vet said yesterday that they
had found a small perineal hernia and I think this may be the cause of
the problems. I think he MAY have been pushing so hard to defecate and
managed to push his bladder into the hernia. This has stopped him
urinating and he may again have strained hard to urinate and damaged
muscles/tendons in the area. The inability to urinate has caused the
urine to back up into his kidney and caused the kidneys to become
inflamed. My wife and I have been wondering if this scenario could give
the high creatine readings in his blood test. He has been home with me
two days now and I would not say he is a sick dog...his eyes are bright
he can drag himself around the garden etc.. What do the group think of
this scenario?

............don't know, sounds sort of reasonable. Are the kidney functions
improving at all?
