Default Cautionary tale

[]
Yikes:

On Monday night, the 85-pound animal was nestled into a
crate with canvas walls in the back of its owner's
pickup when it flew out of the back of vehicle on the
Seward Highway. Packed in with boxes and chairs, he
popped out -- crate and all -- and landed on the
pavement.

Kathy Goans-Kennedy didn't notice her beloved pet
missing until hours and more than 100 miles later, when
she pulled into her Seward home. She screamed when she
saw the gaping gap that his crate had filled.

There is, fortunately, a happy ending. In this case.

Charlie Powell, a spokesman at Washington State University's
College of Veterinary Medicine, says 100,000 dogs die each year
in the United States after falling out of the back of pickups.
Most suffer traumatic injuries when they hit the pavement.
Others that are tethered get dragged, and others get caught in
wheel wells.
