HELP! Chihuahua puppy diarrhea!
hey everyone, i've just become the proud mother of a handsome little
chihuahua by the name of Momo. He was 9 weeks old when i got him, and i've had him for about 5 days now. We were given him as a housewarming gift, i was told he was bought from a pet store, and NO i do not condone puppy milling so those planning to virtually shoot me, please refrain. When we got him home he was a bit shy, i think just a little scared to be in a new place, but he ate and drank. However, we noticed that he had a little bit of a pot belly and diarrhea. The next day we took him to the vet for a once over etc and because i suspected he had worms, the vet took a stool sample to be tested and told us to just continue with his normal diet and not to introduce anything new. He's being fed Science Diet puppy food both can and kibble, it was what they fed him at the pet store so we made sure we got the same brand. The next morning his diarrhea was terrible, it was pretty much liquid and very very stinky, i called the vet who then told me that he indeed had worms - roundworms. The vet also had checked for any diseases and the results came back negative. He told me to give him a 1/4 of a worming tablet and that it should clear up in 24hours. An hour after i gave Momo his tablet he threw up his breakfast and little chunks of the tablet. I took him back to the vet and he gave us a liquid wormer. Now Momo's very active and eats more, however, his stools in the morning are quite solid but as the day progresses they get looser and looser, by night time they're quite mushy and stinky again. Does anyone have any suggestions? I've been researching and don't know if i should change his diet? Or is there anything else i can do? He had his first vacination about 3 weeks ago so i don't think it's a reaction to that. Any advice would be much appreciated. P.S Any chihuahua owners out there who have any words of wisdom? This is my first chi and i'd like all the information i can possibly get! Thank u! |

ups.com... Wormers shouldn't have effects on the stools beyond the time they're in the body. It's possible the dog has some other parasite that is hard to find on first look - like giardia. I wouldn't change the diet at this point. You might try some probiotics to help repopulate the gut with good bacteria. .....And I'd certainly report this pet store for selling a dog with worms. In FL that's against the law, don't know about where you live. Most dogs are born with roundworms and at the very least the store should have taken care of that problem. ........All I know about these dogs is that they tend to get stressed out easily, so make sure your pup has a secure spot (a crate would be good) to retreat to when she wants to rest. And at that age they need a lot of sleep! good luck with your new pup buglady take out the dog before replying |
