Raw hide bones
I was given raw hide chew bones in the basket Blue won at the animal
parade. I have heard so many varied opinions on raw hide chew bones. They get lodged in the intestines. They are full of chemicals. They can give a dog salmonella poisoning. The dog can chew off the end part and choke. They are great for teething and are handy. What does anyone here who has heard about the raw hide controversy think? Show Dog Bark |

Raw hide bones

clicked their heels and said: What does anyone here who has heard about the raw hide controversy think? I go mostly on experience. Retrievers tend to get rawhide soggy and break off big chunks. Rawhide is not digestible. It will usually get stuck in the throat or somewhere inside, or cause diarrhea/excessive water consumption. Raw femur bones are much better for their teeth and a whole lot safer. -- Janet Boss www.bestfriendsdogobedience.com |

Raw hide bones

Pan just does not tear into this stuff. She slobbers to get it all gooey, and then nibbles off pieces. Khan is not nearly that delicate, but he still chews them into small pieces before swallowing. So my dogs are allowed to have rawhide, with supervision. One thing I have found is that there may be unintended consequences when feeding something like this. Like the time Khan got a piece of rawhide speared through and then stuck between his teeth. There aren't very many dogs who'd hold still for you while you have him lie upside down, and then hold the mouth open while attempting to yank off the rawhide piece with tweezers (slimy rawhide is very slippery). So my dogs are allowed to have rawhide, with supervision. I allow my chewers to have rawhide because they are chewers who would rather chew all day than swallow big chunks. The one who likes to devour rather than chew doesn't get rawhide. The ones who do get rawhide only get it when I am going to be right there to supervise. The funniest one with rawhide is the chihuahua. She can chew and chew all day because she daintily gnaws and gnaws without doing much damage. But she still has to be supervised for safety's sake and because she goes from dainty to Cujo in no time if another dog comes close to her when she is chewing. All my dogs prefer marrow bones to rawhide and they are better for them. -- Paula "Anyway, other people are weird, but sometimes they have candy, so it's best to try to get along with them." Raw hide bones
Thanks everyone for the info. I will not be giving raw hide chews to Blue. They sound too dangerous. Show Dog Bark |

Raw hide bones

Khan cannot have marrow bones along with kibble; it upsets his stomach something awful. So once a week, they get a raw meal - RMBs and a marrow bone with it. And I try to time it so that I feed these on days when I know I will be home all day, or over the weekends. Picking up liquid poop is vile and disgusting and no fun at all. Even when the dog has the sense to do it in a corner of the unfinished basement. Suja |

What a good dog to go to the best place in the house if he just can't hold it though. My big problem with feeding has been that Molly has allergies. It was really hard to find what the allergy was to, but it appears to be rice. That is in just about every food out there. We narrowed it down, actually because of the one food, I'm thinking California Natural but we've been through so many I get them mixed up, that has almost nothing in it still made her itch all over. She does fine on foods with no rice, though, and she likes the ones we've tried, so that's good. If she didn't, we'd be in trouble since there aren't that many that don't have rice. -- Paula "Anyway, other people are weird, but sometimes they have candy, so it's best to try to get along with them."
