I'm glad you are open to ideas. You can learn from our experiences and
mistakes. That will spare dogs and heart aches. I made a mistake in
breeding many years ago. I didn't understand that an apparently healthy
female and an apparently healthy male can produce unhealthy puppies. And
I didn't understand exactly how hard it is to place puppies in permanent
homes. Everyone we placed the puppies with appeared to be nice folks. But
chances are that half the puppies were no longer with them on their third
birthday. About 63% of puppy placements fail. That is on average, of
course. What you know about breeding and placement can make all the
difference. And sadly, given the health issues that cropped up later in
the lives of the parents my guess is that all the puppies suffered a
shorter and more painful life than they deserved. Today I would make very
different choices because now I know things I didn't know then. Take the
time to learn, and you can avoid making the bad choice I did.

Would you be willing to give up the idea of breeding her if you found she
might produce unhealthy puppies? If you would not be, then we have
nothing more to discuss. I love dogs and won't help someone breed
unhealthy ones. If the answer is you would, then you will want to educate
yourself on how to find that out.

In the interests of keeping this short, I'll stop there. When you are
ready for more information and considerations, let us know.

One of the 1st things to think about is "why do I want to breed my dog?"
How will producing a litter of puppies from this bitch and a selected stud
dog improve the breed? As you know, each breed standard describes the
"ideal" specimens. The goal of breeding is to get as close to that ideal as
possible. One way to get information about how your bitch compares to the
standard is by exhibiting her in conformation classes at dog shows. Is your
dog smart? Exhibit her in obedience competition. Is your bitch healthy?
What diseases or health problems are unique to your breed and perhaps to
your bitches particular line? Will you perform all the necessary testing?
Who will buy your puppies and why? What will you do if the owner no longer
wants your puppy, maybe a few months or a few years from now--are you
prepared to take it back? What if your bitch dies as a result of this
breeding? Are you prepared to hand raise a litter?
Where did your bitch come from? If from a responsible breeder, what do they
have to say about your plan? Have you talked with other cocker owners or
breeders?

Breeding is a huge undertaking and a life-long responsibility, definitely
not one to be taken lightly. Please think long and hard about your
decision.

Right now the local cocker spaniel area in the DC Metro area has about 85
dogs that are looking for homes. Do a web search for Oldies but Goodies
cocker rescue.

And that is just with ONE rescue.

Please reconsider breeding your dog.
