flaxseed and pregnancy (read the label!)
Flaxseed is an ingredient in some dog foods. It has recently
been pointed out to me that flaxseed (not "flaxseed oil") contains phytoestrogens. These may affect pregnancy by interfering with the level of progesterone, the hormone that maintains pregnancy. I have seen advisories that women not take flaxseed when pregnant or nursing, and an article detailing the effects on pregnancy and offspring in rats. Flaxseed is used in dog food to adjust the level of Omega-3 fatty acids and the ratio of Omega-3 to Omega-6. Some dog foods use fish oil and do not contain flaxseed. The dog food I fed my pregnant bitch was labeled for use during pregnancy and lactation but contains flaxseed. I do not know if her whelping or a similarly disastrous one I supervised two years ago had anything to do with the flaxseed content of the food, but I recommend breeders check the ingredient list on the feed they use.
