My dog doesn't like other dogs
On Tue, 15 Aug 2006 07:02:13 +0000 jacob whittled these words:
When little dogs approach her to smell her she snarles, sometimes bites and chases them. When you are walking down the street minding your own business do you like a total stranger walking up to your face and insisting that you play with them? Dogs are social - but PACK oriented. They don't necessarily enjoy playing with strangers. It is perfectly normal for dogs not to appreciate other dogs running up to them. It is RUDE behavior on the part of the other dog. http://www.flyingdogpress.com/sayhi.html Also if your patting her after like 5 minutes she just walks away, you call her and she doesn't listen. Most border collies are not cuddlers. They prefer not to have extended physical contact. If you are trying to insist that she accept what she no longer finds pleasant then you are punishing her for staying. So she has learned not to stay. If you want to train her, then give her things SHE finds pleasant, not things you THINK she should find pleasant. Same if your bouncing a ball. Try teaching her things that let her use her mind a bit more. Look into clicker training. Look into something more stimulating - agility, muscial freestyle, rally, and yes even herding. http://www.dogplay.com So how can i socialize her to like smaller dogs, not run off, and not be afraid of soccer balls? You can't force a dog to "like" anything. Lots of dogs prefer that other dogs just leave them alone, except the dogs they CHOOSE to play with. Socialization doesn't mean "playing with" it means becoming familiar with. Dog Parks and the like are great for the right dogs, but most mature adult dogs are not the right dogs for dog parks. The immature and the very mature tend to do OK - but the 2 year old to seven year olds very often do not. Don't put her in situations where she has to deal with rude dogs. Don't make staying with you unpleasant by continuing long periods of physical contact. Do train several times a day for 3 to 5 minutes each. Learn about clicker training and once you understand it you'll know what to do about the scocer balls. -- jacob -- Diane Blackman There is no moral victory in proclaiming to abhor violence while preaching with violent words. http://dog-play.com/ http://dogplayshops.com/ |
