Default Dog Book Recommendations

I would like to get some suggestions from anyone who might have any
ideas thoughts on what books I should read as a new dog owner.

If you could suggest five dog books for someone to read what would they
be? I'd be interested in both puppy & adult dog related subjects
though puppihood is my most immediate need. I read some of the new
skete books a long time ago and thought that I might want to reread
them since it has been several years.

Thanks.

I was in the same situation--bought both of the Monks of New Skete
books in the mid 90's, but reread them recently when a new puppy
entered our life, and what they've trained matches nicely to the dog
club I'm attending with obedience training.

The latest book that I bought is Cesar Millan's book called,
"Cesar's Way". You can get it at Amazon.com. I usually buy books that are
breed specific, so I have a few books each on Poodles, Lhasas, Chow Chows
and Rottweilers.

This is tough. Some of these don't exactly fall into the 'Dog Training'
realm necessarily, but are interesting reads, nonetheless. In no particular
order:

Don't shoot the dog - Karen Pryor
The Other End of the Leash - Patricia McConnell
The Power of Positive Dog Training - Pat Miller
Dogs - Coppinger & Coppinger

I haven't done any puppy stuff myself, but these have been recommended by
people I trust:

Before & After Getting Your Puppy - Dunbar (also Sirius puppy training
videos by him).

You should probably see what your local library has to offer. Mine has most
of these books.

Hi!

I found a great new wiki site that has a lot of info on dog breeds, new
puppies, etc. It has a broad range of topics, so you should take a
look and see what's there... Hope it helps!

Here is the page that starts dog ca

Here is the homepage:

Cheers!

How is Cesar Millan's book? I enjoy watching his television show.

It is not a how-to book. It is mainly a book on Cesar's philosophy, his
life and he got started working with dogs. There are a couple of chapters
on how-to at the end. I liked it very much.
