Default Dog Book Recommendations

I would like to get some suggestions from anyone who might have any
ideas thoughts on what books I should read as a new dog owner.

If you could suggest five dog books for someone to read what would they
be? I'd be interested in both puppy & adult dog related subjects
though puppihood is my most immediate need. I read some of the new
skete books a long time ago and thought that I might want to reread
them since it has been several years.

Thanks.

I was in the same situation--bought both of the Monks of New Skete
books in the mid 90's, but reread them recently when a new puppy
entered our life, and what they've trained matches nicely to the dog
club I'm attending with obedience training.

The latest book that I bought is Cesar Millan's book called,
"Cesar's Way". You can get it at Amazon.com. I usually buy books that are
breed specific, so I have a few books each on Poodles, Lhasas, Chow Chows
and Rottweilers.

This is tough. Some of these don't exactly fall into the 'Dog Training'
realm necessarily, but are interesting reads, nonetheless. In no particular
order:

Don't shoot the dog - Karen Pryor
The Other End of the Leash - Patricia McConnell
The Power of Positive Dog Training - Pat Miller
Dogs - Coppinger & Coppinger

I haven't done any puppy stuff myself, but these have been recommended by
people I trust:

Before & After Getting Your Puppy - Dunbar (also Sirius puppy training
videos by him).

You should probably see what your local library has to offer. Mine has most
of these books.

Jim,
I suggest Cesar's Way by Cesar Millan
I borrowed a book from the library quite awhile ago called Monks of
Skete?
Another one that I like is by Barbara Woodhouse from waaaaay back in
the day I think it is titled "No Bad Dogs" I doubt that it is in print
now but you may find it at E-bay or the like. I know you asked for
books and I like to have a book so I can refer spefically to my problem
of the day. However Cesar also has a TV show called the Dog Whisperer
on National Geographic channel. Although I really haven't noticed him
dealing with puppies so much it is more problem dogs and you may already
know about it, if not check it out.
Thanks Suja for posting the list of books I think I will look them up
for me.
Good luck to you and your new dog.

Be Free,
Judy

Why don't you check this website out? It is:

Courteous Canines
http://home.adelphia.net/~nuxodom/

It is a very good one and the dog training manual is available as a
downloadable .PDF file or a Microsoft Word .DOC file ......

I sent it to my brother to train his new dog with and it works.

You will enjoy it!

I think the first three are really great, not familiar with the
4th (adding it to my reading list).

I'd also recommend
Good Owners, Great Dogs - Brian Kilcommons and Sarah Wilson
