Default Mild ACL tear maintenance advice needed

My three year old Rottweiler was diagnosed with a (hopefully, it seems)
mild ACL tear today. He's a 150 pound fellow, (his father was 150, mom
120), though he's all muscular and fit. Our best estimate is that it
came from cornering whilst running at the park (he doesn't show much in
terms of pain, so knowing when anything bothers him is more
interpretive...). We have him on anti-inflams and we're to suppress
his activity for 4-6 weeks.

I was just curious if anyone has found a brace type of support to help
prevent aggravation of this type of injury. I don't intend to keep him
from moving it, but I even have a knee brace I wear when I play
basketball to keep me from abusing my knee too much!

Any feedback would be appreciated.

What did the vet say were the chances of a complete heal without surgery for
a 150lb guy?

I have a beagle/retriever mix 47 lbs who has a mild tear. He got his from
jumping off the kitchen table before I could stop him.

The orthopedic put him on Rimadyl for the pain and said as long as this is
working that we won't fix it unless he tears it completely. He said that
some dogs can go through life without it completely tearing and that he
prefers to avoid surgery in those cases because they can end up with worse
arthritis than if it were left alone. At some point I expect that he will
blow the knee completely because he loves to rough house with my other dog
and they get pretty wound up at times.

As a precaution we are working on getting him slimmed down but of course he
thinks we are starving him.

It's amazing how these tears usually come from such little things like
running down the stairs or jumping off the kitchen table!

I've seen that happen with success for small to medium dogs, but never for
the large or giant breeds. Curious to see how this works out (and hope it
does without surgery).

I have a 12 year old female black lab and she was diagnosed with an ACL tear in 2003. We immediately opted for surgery. The surgical procedure was called Tibial Plateau Leveling Osteotomy or TPLO. I highly encourage you to see a veterinary orthopedic specialist to discuss this option. Although, my lab's recovery was slow and painful, the final result was unbelievable.

While we do not have a knee brace (we have one for hock support and tendons) we do not have a knee brace. What we do make is a totally non-toxic hot/cold pack for dogs. What is great about it are the 2 elastic stratps that attach via velcro anywhere on thepack, making it useful for hips, shoulders and a great wrap around a knee. Stores in the freezer for cold applications and put in the microwave for moist heat.

You can get more info on our site Welcome to BellasPainRelief.com, home of Bella's Hot/Cold Pain Relief packs for dogs! or our blog Bella's Pain Relief.
