Can anyone tell me how long it takes for a new breed to get AKC
recognized, The reason I am asking, is why are so many people going
nuts, trying to invent new breeds, ie. puggle

They aren't trying to invent new breeds. Instead, they've found a
marketing ploy to get suckers to pay big bucks for mixes. None of those
so-called designer breeds is a breed--they're an F1 cross of two
purebreds (and likely poor quality ones at that). A breed is a breed
when it breeds true (produces dogs that look like the parents) over
several generations.

And it takes years to become an AKC breed.

All I can say is that I am sick to damned death of Puggles.

I see them absolutely *everywhere*. Beagles are awesome. Pugs are amazing.
But there is no reason in the world to combine them. Its not like they have
complementary temperaments, strengths or structure. Its just bizarre.

But it's such.a.cute.name! I think that's all it takes. "oooooo, if we
combined beagles and pugs we could call them puggles! Cool name! Let's
do it!"

gag me.

You and me both! I'm getting more and more of them. So ugly they're
cute?

But don't you want a chubby looking beagle thing that still has the
beagle bark... because if you get a puggle you just might get one. Or
you might get a stretched out looking pug that makes a little woof
sound.

I personally hate them, and don't see why people can be so stupid to
actually get them.

That's pretty nasty. Some of us get our first dogs from
questionable sources but are willing to learn.

Sorry, I wasn't meaning it towards people getting dogs from
questionable sources. I was meaning it towards people allowing
themselves to get pulled into the whole designer dog craze. My first
cairn terriers were from questionable back yard breeders, but I've
since learned why that was a bad idea. Since then I have only gotten
one dog, and he is a rescue mutt. My next dog will be from a reputable
breeder after my ugly mutt is no longer with me, which hopefully will
be a long time from now.

Don't place too high expectations on those "reputable breeders."
Not only can no two people agree on a definition for the term,
the most carefully researched breeding is still subject to chance.
(Speaking as a breeder who tries hard to produce good dogs.)

Hope ugly mutt is with you for a long time.

Don't worry, I'm aware of the chance involved in a breeding. As far as
I am concerned, the only definition of the term reputable breeder that
matters is my personal definition. I will be the person aquiring a dog
after all. As long as they follow my standards, then the chance for a
problem dog should be lower in theory. And obviously, I wouldn't hold
anything against the breeder if it doesn't turn out that way, because
if they followed my standards, then they did everything they could have
been reasonably expected to do.
