The chemical in chocolate that is toxic to dogs is 'watered down' in milk
chocolate so that a *small bit* to an 80lb dog wouldn't cause the toxicity.
The dark chocolate or baker's chocolate would be very dangerous. That said,
it's never wise to give chocolate to dogs. It can cause intenstinal upset
among other things. When you have a dog there are just some things you have
to store up in high cupboards. If he gets at chocolate and he's a magician
with doors, store it in the refrigerator.

I'm sure that others will tell you that Cocoa is Toxic to dogs so
although milk chocolate is better it is actually best to avoid
chocolate at all.

Like the other poster said, you have to put it behind a closed door if the
dog is clever about stealing it. I have to keep my purse in the pantry
because my cat will steal things out of it.

it's simple really: chocolate is very bad for dogs, keep it away from
him. If your wife has chocolate in her purse, I'm sure there is
someplace she can put it where the dog can't access it. If you love
your dog, keep him safe!

Better yet, eat all the chocolate. That's my solution and I'm
sticking to it!!

Had a major chocolate incident with my dog (8 pound dog... 1/2 pound of
chocolate), so I did some research. The chemical in chocolate that is
supposed to be bad for dogs is one that is similar to caffeine. I can't
remember the name. Anyhow the dog needs to eat quite a lot of it to really
make them "take to the vet" sick. A human would get sick eating the same
amount of chocolate. I found a chart on the internet that gave the dog
poundage to the amount of chocolate that would be bad. I was amazed at
really the large amount of chocolate they could eat before they'd be off to
the vet. You and I would be SO sick if we ate the same amount. My dog had
the runs for about 2 days and then was fine. And as other posters have
pointed out I've learned to keep the chocolate stored really high.

If they get a candy bar I wouldn't even worry about it. If they get the
Costco bag of chocolate chips then you would need to examine the amount they
ate.

Depends on the dog. Smaller dogs could be affected by that candy bar. And
it's not just the toxicity. The chocolate and ingredients in it can cause
other symptoms and distress the GI tract and pancreas. And it depends on the
chocolate. Dark chocolate is more toxic than milk chocolate.

And some larger dogs are more sensitive to that chemical than their 'peers'.
Just steer clear of chocolate, or as another poster said, eat it yourself!

And "white chocolate" is obviously barely chocolate at all. I remember
seeing some charts showing showing the toxic dose of various types of
chocolate. The lethal dose of white chocolate was about fifty pounds,
and you had to drop it onto the dog from a third story window.
