Default New Puppy Need Help

We recently purchased a GSD he is 8 weeks old the breeder gave him his 8 week shots as we were leaving. At first the puppy hardly ate and I called the breeder and he said give him a few more days it's seperation aniexty, which he began eating more in a few days. All he does is simply look unhappy, hardly plays and sleeps alot. His behavior has been the same since day one, I had puppies when I was younger and they were very playful he's not. Is it normal behavior because he is so little or could it be a reaction to the shots, or could he be depressed. Please help.

Thank You

Without a trip to the vet as a first resort, its hard to say.

I think I agree with Tara. A vet visit may be in order. My new puppy about
wore me out from day one. I did have to try different things to find what
she liked to eat, but she was always eager to eat just didn't always eat
what I gave her after a nibble and sniff.

I would not worry about the sleeping too much, puppies do need quite a lot
of sleep.

I would expect the shots to maybe upset him for perhaps 24/48 hours and no
more. They may make the puppy feel cold and shivery for a short period
afterwards, and also cause the puppy to sleep for a few hours after a shot.

What breed is he?

Take a small sample of his poop with you to the vet. I'd bet he's got
worms.

Has the puppy even had an examination by a veterinarian? If the breeder gave
shots, was there also any worming done? What records came with the puppy?

.........all good thoughts, and some further ones:
---------she sent the puppy off too early - 8 weeks is young, esp. for a
large breed
---------puppy should have been given shots, then stayed with mother for
another week to see if there were any reactions. Speaking of which what was
in the vax?
--------stress of going a new place (without mother) is high - to expect the
puppy to deal with this plus a shot is stupid; good way to stress out what
little immune system a puppy that age possesses.
---------this breeder sucks.

Your breeder shouldn't have given him the vaccines, or do you mean they
took them to a vet? it is rare but possible they can have reactions to
them. You would need to see your vets to find out more and alternative
vaccines could be given.

Well, yeah - but breeders do it anyway. Manufacturers won't guarantee their
vaccines unless given by a veterinarian. The biggest problem is where the
breeders get the vaccinations. Have they been shipped and stored properly?
If they came from over seas, they probably were illegally re-labeled for
sale in the US and proper handling and storage at that point would be
questionable to me. Their motive is to save money which is understandable.
But would these same breeders give their own children their series of infant
vaccinations themselves? Just sayin'...

Before you get too attached, take the pup to the vet and have the vet check
him over. If there is a health problem, I would have the vet write a report
and sign it, and then I would return the dog to the breeder with the signed
statement, and get your money back.
It might be the shots that has slowed him down, but that would only last a
couple of days.
