Default What is the best dog food?

We think our dog got sick from eating Kibbles and Bits and have
started actually feeding him lots of cooked meat and whole grains.
Actually, this is our own version of BARF. It is a lot of trouble to
prepare this so we would appreciate recommendatins of the best dry dog
food that is made of good protein and grain ingredients. Any help
will be appreciated.

There are lots of good foods out there but not really any "best" food
for all dogs. What kind of sickness did the Kibbles and Bits give
your dog? If it was allergies, you want to choose a food with fewer
ingredients (fewer possibilities of things he's allergic to) and no
ingredients that are common dog allergens. If you are worried about
coat or energy level or other things, that might change where you go
next as far as food choices. A good rule of thumb is that if you can
buy it at the grocery store, it probably isn't a really good food,
though even so plenty of dogs live long happy lives on lower quality
foods. Do a google groups search on this group and
rec.pets.dogs.behavior and you will find numerous discussions of what
foods various regulars here feed their dogs and why. You can even get
input from people who don't post here regularly any more.

I feed mine BARF on a daily basis, but for snacks I feed California
Natural. My shepherd likes it and I have seen no problems as a result
of it.

I feed my girls a combination of Solid Gold dry food (Wolf King, since they are all large dogs) and solid gold cans. I also just discovered a canned food company called Evangers. I picked up their Roast chicken drummet dinner and it actually had real whole chicken drummets in it! At first I was a bit taken back, but the bones are extremley soft and the dogs went crazy over it. It was as a bout as close as home cooked as you can get from a can.
