Demodectic mange in older dogs
My 10yo mixed breed recently developed what appears to be a classic red
mange lesion on her side. Once the dead skin was scraped off, a red hairless spot remained. Thankfully, it has been limited to this one spot. My first dog had to deal with the generalized type throughout her life as a consequence of being taken from her mother too soon as a puppy. Now, the question: can prednisone supress a dog's immune system to the point that this type of mange could become a frequent problem? She takes a small dose of this steroid to control other problems she has. Normally, I'd just take her to the vet and have them tell me if this is the likely cause, but I must admit that money is tight and I can't afford to take her to see the vet every time she gets a rash. Any help would be greatly appreciated. -- "Whatever you do, don't stick your head in the oven" - Keith Hernandez, on how to end a batting slump |
