Great photos - so nice I thought they were from a trial but then this would
be a big case of training in the ring. Or does this mean you have a great
photographer at your practice sessions? OOOO I'm really envious. I would
love some photos of Lucy in action.

On the subject of agility, I'm really pleased with Lucy right now. We
participated in an Agility League last year which started out great but had
an unexpected consequence in that it really slowed Lucy down. The League
used excellent/advanced courses with lots of tight traps and turns (none
with any sort of flow). All dogs, even the novice ones like Lucy, had to do
the same course but the novice dogs were given more time. I didn't realize
that trying to pilot a novice dog like Lucy through such difficult courses
was going to demotivate her. All those traps & tight turns gave her the
idea that any obstacle right in front of her was the wrong one. And I
didn't have the skills to guide her in a way that gave her confidence.

So this fall, I took some remedial agility classes with a local private
trainer and we worked on Lucy's forward momentum and confidence. She's
really come a long way and is pushing boldly from one obstacle to another
once again. She really is a zippy little collie. And the best part is that
I'm learning so much about handling. Our instructor is very good at seeing
where things are going wrong for us and giving me simple, straightforward
yet very insightful help. For example, I kept losing Lucy after tunnels - I
would send her through and get in position to handle her through the next
set of obstacle but she would often run straight to me instead. Janet
noticed that I would send her through the tunnel then race off to start
handling the next section. She had me get into position, hesitate for Lucy
to reappear, "pick her up" / reconnect with Lucy (make brief eye contact )
THEN start handling the next obstacles. And now, viola! (or is it voila?)
I'm not losing Lucy after tunnels anymore. So much conflict and confusion
and the solution was so simple.

Chris and her smoothies,
Pablo and Lucy

Big case of training in the ring. NADAC allows it. I talked to the judge
before we went in, and clarified what I could and could not do. You
*can* TIR in NADAC though, of course, you NQ the run. In theory you
cannot TIR in any harsh manner though frankly, I've seen a lot of
it--what generally happens is that the handler does something very harsh
*then* gets whistled off after it's too late... So yep, a real trial and
boy was she mad that I was actually able to put hands on her! I wish I
had video, the annoyed screaming was an especially nice touch.

Oh boy. There's a reason to do Novice first! I agree that putting a
green dog on really tough courses too early can have a detrimental
effect on speed.

Excellent. When you find an instructor that clicks it makes a huge
difference.

And a viola is a stringed instrument. Voila! is a goofy French phrase.

Do you think she understands the difference between practice and
trialling, and that she's figured out that she can get away with
being a brat at trials? I can see that TIR would be especially
valuable under those circumstances.

I wish I
had video, the annoyed screaming was an especially nice touch.

I'd pay money to watch that.

I know that look *very* well.

DH was having contact issues with Sassy at one point last spring. We did a
NADAC trial and he picked her up and put her back on the dog walk each time
she jumped the contact. (Then left the ring.)

You could tell she was very surprised - just didn't expect it to happen in a
trial. And by the end of the weekend, her contacts were much better!

I have a lot of gripes about NADAC (starting with *why* hasn't the points
page on the website been updated since May 2?) but that allowing TIR was
very helpful. This year we'll be using the CPE trials for that if we need
to. Sometimes it is the quickest and easiest way to correct behavior that
only happens at trials. These dogs aren't so dumb!

Yeah, just be glad I didn't spell it Wah-la (one of the many spelling
variations I've seen in newsgroup land)

Erm - my dogs' points have been updating regularly for quite some time now;
at the moment, they're current through the end of September.

Sassy's points are there - she was registered there in 2004. But the page
says that they still don't have the 2002 and 2003 dogs up. Which means no
Spenser.

The titles page is still only up to May 2.

And - dog forbid - that they should actually send out title certificates -
or even make them available on line!

It doesn't make me value their titles very highly when my dogs earn them and
they don't bother to recognize them. (We have six coming from May to July
to September.) Had we had less lazy judges at our last couple of NADAC
trials, both dogs would be running in Elite before NADAC recognizes their
Novice titles.
