Dogs and Cats living peacefully together
I have a 7 year old daschund and 7 month old kitties and they refuse to live peacfully. HELP!!!
Can they ever be socialized to live in harmony? The dog would kill the cats if he could get to them and has to be crated while inside. Is there any way to get him to be civil towards the kitties? HELP, I am going nuts!!!! Mickee |

There isn't much hope of this working if the dog wasn't raised with cats and
he keeps trying to get the cats. You might make some progress with lots of work but I wouldn't trust the dog for even a second with them. Celeste "Mickee" wrote in message ... I agree that trusting the dog alone with the cats will probably never be an option, but harmony (under supervision) is certainly a possibility if the dog is taught to leave the cats alone. I'll leave how to go about doing that up to the professionals here. -- Lynne http://picasaweb.google.com/what.the.hell.is.it/ |

In most cases, I disagree, but a Doxie is meant to kill small things, so it's not an ideal pairing. I've managed to teach a 10 year old dog who had recently killed 9, count 'em 9, young opposums, and a rat, to accept and not kill a small grey kitten. It takes effort of course, but can be done, and yes, they lived together safely, without separate confinement, for the next 5.5 years. -- Janet Boss www.bestfriendsdogobedience.com |

Thank you for the suggestions. I read them all.
I had the dog first and the cats are the invaders. Ha! I used a shock collar on him when I first got him at 8 months old to try to curtail his barking, to no avail. He would bark right though it while it was working. NO good for him. He is strong willed and very hard headed. He would eat the cats if he caught them. He is 17# and they are less than 8# each so quite a bit of difference. I will continue working with him, but see it will probably not ever work under one roof. UGH!!!! Thanks a million, Mickee I have a 7 year old daschund and 7 month old kitties and they refuse to live peacfully. HELP |

Barking, hard-headedness and chasing smaller animals are in his job description. Mustang Sally |
