Default Dog day

I just have to gush about my girl. Today I left her for just over 8 hours,
alone and loose in the house (as always). She has never been alone for
more than 5 hours, EVER, and typically she isn't alone even that long. The
kids are both gone today and my mother wasn't around to stop by and let her
out so I was sure I'd come home to pee and/or poo somewhere, especially
considering Roxy's incontinence. BUT NO!!!! My girl held it ALL DAY!!
I'm so proud.

Also, I finally found a feed store with Pill Pockets and it worked with her
Proin tablets. WAHOO! She really hated swallowing those things, and
nothing else worked.

I can't wait to give her the giant bag of toys I got her for Christmas!

Good news all around. Wann hear my news? Lucy, who'll be 10 on the
31st, managed to have a post-dinner snack of a very freshly dead
squirrel. Eww, eww, and more eww. It's a first for her, as far as I
know, and really quite gross.

Heck, there are folk in Kentucky who think squirrel is good food! I'll bet
Lucy enjoyed the heck out of it!!

Hooray for Roxy!!!

I've taught her not to jump on me when I get home. Not because I don't
like it, but because many of our guests do not (aka My Mother). So Roxy
has this cute new thing she does where she crouches real low and wags here
entire body just DYING for me to smother her with love. If she had any
kind of coat, she'd make a great floor sweeper!

delurking Can I ask how you taught her this?

When our dog was a puppy, we always bent down to her level to pet her, and
up until recently didn't have much of a problem with the jumping on people.
However, we have temporarily moved into an apartment, she's not getting as
much off-leash exercise at this point in her life, so is much more bouncy
and boisterous when we get home. Any tips?

Oh, and congrats to Roxy on staying dry all day!

I started making her sit before petting her, and also asked visitors not
to pet her unless she was sitting. No sit = no pet. So now she has this
fake sit where she's all crouched down and waggy. I allow it because
it's so darn cute.

The best advice I've read here is to stop making a big deal out of coming
and going. A few minutes before you leave, give your dog something to
keep her busy--like a PB filled Kong or something else she likes that
lasts--and just leave without saying goodbye or otherwise drawing
attention to yourself. When you come home, ignore her for 5-10 minutes
before greeting her. If she jumps on you, tell her off and go about what
you were doing. Then make sure to only pet her when she's sitting. With
consistency and patience, eventually she will be sitting for pets (and
maybe excitedly like Roxy!).

By the way, I do pet her when he's not sitting, just not in situations
where she would normally jump on me or someone else.

Thanks!! I really expected to come home to at least one pee puddle, but
she really did great. (I'm sure her meds for incontinence had a hand in
that, too...)

Dogs who aren't sitting don't get any attention at all. No eye contact,

Dogs that sit get all sorts of nice attention!

Well yeah, but I already said that--and in about 10 times as many words and
not nearly as clearly. Heh.

Could be worse. It could be horked up partially digested not-so-freshly
dead squirrel.

Atta girl, Lucy. Did she have any help in catching the tree rats?

Oh honey, squirrel is nuthin. At least it was fresh dead. At this house
we've had rotten fish, skunk parts, deer parts, and moldy vole. Yum, yum!

If it makes you feel any better, none of my dogs has gotten ill yet...
