Default Long slender worms

I have a plastic box with water in it in my yard. on the rim of the box
was a long thin worm curled up which looked like photos that I have
seen of heartworms. Could this be a heartworm? It is about a foot long
when stretched out and about as thin as a piece of string. I put it
into the water and later in the day when I checked back it seems to
have died. Can heartworms live outside of an animal? I searched for
images but could not find one that looks like it except for heartworms.

Thanks! That's it. We were all concerned as to whether to let pets out
in the area. You have put our minds to rest.
