oooh - ship me a dozen!

Why not advertise them as what they are - Labrador Retriever/Poodle
mixes?

Love both breeds, just not smooshed together on purpose.

I'm guessing, Lab X Miniature Poodle.

Oh, yeah. See, I can't even think inside that box!

This kind of thing disgusts me.

You got it.

What I don't understand is why people are going for these mutts when the
shelters are full of them at a fraction of the price?! I have nothing
against mutts (you know I love mine) but this is ridiculous. I shudder to
think of people breeding their pet Labradoodle and selling the offspring.
And so on and so on...

HOW MUCH FOR 1ST? HOW MUCH FOR 3RD?

WHERE IS FLORDIA? IS IT NEAR CANADIA?

A co-worker explained to me that she got hers because she really wanted a
nice large dog but was highly allergic. I asked her why not a standard
poodle, and she said she hated them (but apparently, HALF was ok..!?) I then
asked why not a CCR or PWD and she said she considered them, but after
investigating the websites on the Doodles, she found an Australian breeder
who was really, really "good." (Her words, not mine!) They screened homes
carefully, she said, and asked lots of questions, and when she put her order
in they said she could choose from high to low activity level, coat type,
and so on and then they filled her order with the perfect puppy. In other
words, they provided a skilled sales pitch and she bought it, and the pup,
hook, line and sinker. Sigh...

There IS such a thing as a good breeder of crossbred dogs, you know, just
as there is such a thing as a bad breeder of "purebred" dogs. Doesn't mean
that this particular breeder IS good, but the fact that the dogs are
crossbred doesn't automatically equate to bad breeding - again, just as the
fact that dogs are "purebred" doesn't automatically equate to good breeding.

then they filled her order with the perfect puppy.

1: How long has she had the dog now? Does she still think it was a good
match?

2.Why do you think it's impossible for a breeder to match a prospective
owner with a puppy's characteristics?
Or is it that you think only those who breed "purebreds" are capable of
assessing puppies in a litter and matching them with appropriate prospective
buyers?

I agree with the latter, (and why is "purebred" in quotes?) but I'm far from
convinced of the former. While in theory I believe it is POSSIBLE to be a
responsible breeder who breeds mixes, so far I've never been provided an
example that would pass my (decidedly quite stringent) set of standards. I'm
aware of crossbreeding for sled dogs, for example, but that situation is
almost entirely removed from the norm with regard to dogs as pets, and thus
my standards wouldn't fit the bill any more than it would fit breeding
horses or chickens. I'm also aware of crossbreeding "lurchers" for working
purposes, but I'd daresay there is little of that done in the US and my
standards really only fit for North America as we have a different homeless
dog problem than most of the world. So with the exception of those two, very
minor and exclusive, breeding groups, where would one find a responsibly
bred mix in the US/Canada?

Doesn't mean

the fact that dogs are "purebred" doesn't automatically equate to good

I'm assuming you aren't saying this for my benefit, as I'm fairly sure you
know that I'm aware of that, and nothing in my post implied that those were
my beliefs.

1: How long has she had the dog now? Does she still think it was a good

The dog is just over one year old. She loves him dearly. I wager she's
likely love a well bred purebred just as much, though.

2.Why do you think it's impossible for a breeder to match a prospective
owner with a puppy's characteristics?

Warp my words much? I think it's highly unlikely that a breeder with any
sorts of ethics or values would fill orders from puppy buyers overseas,
guaranteeing them a "low energy" dog (especially when crossing two breeds of
significantly more than low energy levels) and otherwise treating a dog
purchase like ordering a new car from a dealer.

Or is it that you think only those who breed "purebreds" are capable of
assessing puppies in a litter and matching them with appropriate
prospective buyers?

Why don't you tell me, apparently you know what I think already, eh?

Christy
