Default Can anything else be done?

I believe I've mentioned the guy at the dog park who wants to breed his
female Boxer. She is a nice enough dog, but nowhere near the breed
standards. I've met his boy dog as well (he's dog aggressive, and used to
try to fight with Khan), and he's nowhere near meeting the breed standards
either. He mentioned yesterday that his boy dog needs to lose about 15
pounds, and he thinks that it will be easier on his bitch because he's
planning on breeding them in the fall.

I've tried saying just about everything I can think of to keep him from
doing this. Dropped hints and stories about dog overpopulation problems,
dogs ending up in homes that are neglectful, the statistics for dogs losing
their home, how dangerous this can be for the bitch and how much work it is
to keep the pups alive if something happens to her, etc.

So what does he do? He offers me one of the future puppies. *sigh*

The sad thing is that he really is a very nice guy, who clearly loves his
dogs and takes good care of them. He clearly loves the breed, and loves the
new 7 month old boxer pup who is now a regular to the dog park. She is a
rescue, and he knows her story. I just don't know what else to do. All
ideas are welcome.

Ask him for his email address and then send him links to searches which
show all the Boxers that are in rescue and in shelters...? If he has a
heart, maybe that will get to him.

Why? Seriously. Have you tried asking him to explain *why* he
wants to breed her? Because it seems to me that the very real risk
of death, and of having to hand rear puppies, juxtaposed with the
reason he wants to breed her, might be your best bet.

I would point out that GOOD breeders of ANY breed work with their breed
rescue *before* breeding in order to best understand temperament and
training issues, as well as to best learn how to best screen homes for that
breed.

Of course I'm totally lying about the motives for why they work with
rescue, but it might work.

Something that can often hit home - ask him if he's willing to risk
losing his bitch. Pregnancy and whelping is not always as easy as
Neo's, and bitches DO die. Something anyone planning on breeding
needs to be prepared for.

That gives me an idea. I am going to look up Boxer rescue and give 'em a
call. They might be able to help.
