How to train dog to get leash when it wants to walk
I have a 10 year old dog that I walk every day. She understands it
when I say "Wanna go for a walk" and gets real excited. I have tried to teach her to "go get the leash" without any success. For what it's worth, I can throw her toy (an old sock) and say "Go get the toy" and she will go get it and bring it to me. But whenever she wants to go for a walk, I would like to train her to get get the leash. Can anyone suggest how to accomplish this? I have tried saying "go get the leash" and then getting it and holding it up to her mouth and saying "C'mon, give the leash to me" but no luck. I've tried stonewalling and saying "No leash...no walk" but after a few minutes with mno results I go ahead and get it myself. I know nothing about dog training, but I do love the dog and believe she loves me. I have considered the possibility that the dog refuses to be trained because it knows it already has ME trained; still not sure how to go about bring about the desired behavior. Any suggestions are appreciated. Thanks in advance. - Steve |
