I'd be grateful for some help!

We are taking our pet dog elsewhere in the EU (to Finland by road,
except across the channel!) and then back to the UK in about a year's
time.

I have read about the pet passport requirements at the DEFRA website,
and understand that the requirements to get the document issued a

1) microchipping
2) vaccination against rabies

and that the further requirements for the document to be usable a

a) blood test result showing sufficient anti-rabies antibodies (which
test can be done anywhere in the EU)
b) rabies vaccination kept "up to date" (currently every 2 years, but
if a date is missed, another blood test can be done instead of another
vaccination)
c) treatment against ticks and tapeworm shortly before travel (I am
not sure whether this is only required for entry/re-entry into UK)
d) no re-entry to UK until 6 months after blood test

In fact, the UK, being outside the Schengen area, is the only country
we'll be travelling to that actually has routine border controls at
all, but we want to stay within the law, and be prepared to show
proper documentation.

A local vet, however, who says she has got no leaflets on the PP
scheme, tells me verbally that vaccinations against other diseases
also have to be "kept up to date", as a "legal requirement" for the
issue of a pet passport. Since I believe that vaccinations after the
initial ones are purely a money-spinner for the manufacturers and
vets, and can actually weaken the dog, I suspect I know where she is
coming from.

Please could someone help with the following queries:

A) am I right to think that the only vaccination legally required
before a pet passport is issued (and made valid for travel) is against
rabies?

B) how many vets/LVIs in the UK actually issue a passport without non-
rabies vaccinations having been administered? (For all I know, they
may have set the system up so that it is virtually impossible to get a
PP in the UK unless you pay a vet to carry out regular vaccinations
against a range of diseases).

The pet must be chipped first, then given the anti rabies jab. One month
(28days)later a blood test to check it has taken. If Ok the the pet can
RETURN to uk 6 months after the date of the jab.( It can leave any time
before the 6th month!!)The current advice is that the booster jabs should be
given every 12 months. There is a general expectation that all other routine
treatment, innoculations etc have been carried out in the right timescales
and recorded in the pet passport. Between 24 and 48 hours before LANDING
back in UK, the pet must be treated for ticks and worms and the treatment
recorded in the passport.
Did this for several years with my two dogs and apart from the first year
when it was starting had no probs(and that was only because the ferry
company were not familiar enough with the process!!!) As long as all your
papers are in order, you should have no difficulties. Incidentally it is a
good idea to carry the blood test results with you in case there is a
problem and you need to see a vet before crossing back. Amazed your vet does
not have the information as he/she will have tp provide the initial
documentation and passport!
