Need help with dog food
We have an English Setter who is about 9 years old. Until 4 months ago
we fed him dry dog food we got from various sources. . Science Diet. . Kibbles and Bits. He started acting very lethargic and stiff. Even winced in pain when we touched various places on his body. We took him to a vet and had every test possible but nothing showed up. Then I read in a pet news group that Kibbles and Bits had something like Hydrocloric acid that could produce the symptoms he showed. We saw numerous recommendations for BARF and my wife started making all his food from cheap meat cuts and whole grains. His health improved but he seems to have gotten much thinner. We need some kind of dry food to supplement his diet. . something with some calories that will put some weight on him. He is very active. We live in the country and he is out most of the time ranging around our land. Can you give us any recommendations for a supplemental food? |

If you want to pack in the calories and don't mind a particularly unusual food, Innova Evo has high calories and insanely high protein and fat, which ought to make a big difference in your dog's coat, as well. It was formulated for people who like the idea of feeding raw but either don't have the time or don't trust themselves to do it right. But otherwise, Canidae, California Natural, Eukanuba, Chicken Soup, etc., should all be fine. -- Melinda Shore - Software longa, hardware brevis - If you can't say it clearly, you don't understand it yourself -- John Searle |

Wouldn't it be great if it were 100% fat and 100% protein? 200% is twice as good as 100%!! Maybe someone should make a food that's 200% fat!?!!!??!!! I like Evo in certain circumstances, including weight gain, but you've got to understand what you're doing. My dogs are kind of high-energy anyway but I fed it to them during the summer, which is their vacation time, and they went batshit. They were climbing the walls. They were being scrappy with each other. They were being very, very annoying. So I switched them back to a less dense food and things went back to normal. -- Melinda Shore - Software longa, hardware brevis - If you can't say it clearly, you don't understand it yourself -- John Searle |
