multi-dog households
I have 5 mixed breed rescue dogs. I volunteer with the local humane
society's dog obedience class and with our local aarf on Saturday adoptions. I'd love to hear some tips from other dog lovers with multi- dog households. Five dogs definitely exhibit pack behaviors that smaller groups do not. Amazingly my four neutered males seem easier to deal with than some other combinations of sexes. I recently found that buying heartworm and flea meds from Australia is so much cheaper than dealing with my vet whom I really love but charges an arm and a leg. I'd love to hear about any other money savers and training tips for large groups. |

Five dogs definitely exhibit pack behaviors that smaller groups do not. What made you think they wouldn't? Amazingly my four neutered males seem easier to deal with than some other combinations of sexes. Did you do any research into this topic *before* you started to rescue so many dogs? Do you have any plans to rescue even more dogs? I recently found that buying heartworm and flea meds from Australia is so much cheaper than dealing with my vet whom I really love but charges an arm and a leg. It's just a hunch, but you could probably save even more money by ordering it from, say, China. Just kidding! Did you know that your vet can write a prescription for you that you can use at reputable online animal-supply distributors, e.g. http://www.drsfostersmith.com/ You'll save some money that way. You can also often arrange for a steep discount from your own vet (because you have so many rescue dogs) simply by asking for one. I'd love to hear about any other money savers and training tips for large groups. Have you ever trained or raised *a* dog before? -- Handsome Jack Morrison Way to go, Madame Speaker! From my limited experience of having more than one dog at a time, I'd say it is more dependant on the owner than on the dogs as to how they get along. My experience is with females. I have been told that two females are not a good combination for behavior problems but have had 3 combinations of females and all got along fine when made to do so by the dominant animal, me. We have owned a dachund/Dobermann combination a Dobermann/ mutt combunation and a Smooth Fox terrier/ Kerry Blue terrier combination, all female and all got along fine with training. Take charge and things will work out. Mort |
