Dog spills water when we leave
Hello,
We have a new dog. He is an English Springer Spaniel who is about 4 years old. He was a rescue. We picked him up from his foster parents about a week ago. He is very lovable, wants to please and comes when called. Pretty nice for a recuse, right? His only behavior issue/problem is when we leave for a few hours (not the whole day) he dumps or spills his water bowl. It's like he digs in it. Any one else have an experience like this? What did you do to relieve this behavior? Regards, Bob |

That way, when she decides to dig in the water, she only spills it in the tray. Its not as good as not spilling the water, but its better than a wet floor. |

What did you do to relieve this behavior? Sounds like a separation anxiety issue--- our female does it every once in a while. Does he have enough toys to occupy him? Sometimes a scant handful of kibble scattered on the floor will help. A radio tuned to a talk station may help also. Where is he confined? Bob It may be because he's a little anxious, more likely he's just bored, and likes splashing in the water because it's fun. It will probably go away after a while, especially if you don't provide him the opportunity to indulge himself. In addition to giving him some other things to do, I would take up the water when I leave, use a large, heavy ceramic bowl with a low center of gravity (hard to knock over) or get one of those big hamster water bottle things (can't knock it over). If you're only gone for a few hours, and if this is the only thing he does when you're gone that you don't like, I'd just remove his water bowl when I was going out. After he's settled in a bit, I'd try leaving his water out again. --Lia |

Get yourself one of the stainless steel bowls. I have two of these for my
dogs. They can't tip them over but it doesn't mean that she can's slosh the water out with her feet which mine does occasionally. http://tinyurl.com/3yswvl Ceelste "BHawk" wrote in message ups.com... Ludwig Smith Barkley (springer spaniel) has a heavy ceramic bowl. I think we'll just leave him with less water for now. To deal with anxiety or boredom, he has a couple of chew toys but he doesn't seem to go for them. Thanks for all your comments, Bob |

When he was a puppy, and first showing his water fetish, he'd grab mouthfuls from the bowl and spit them onto the floor. When he had enough floodage, he'd roll in it. The image...BG Dylan went through a mercifully brief phase of pawing the water out of her bowl. She was in splash heaven when we visited my SIL, who had a small bowl with large reservoir bottle...
