Default shih tzu - 8 months old

My Wife and both work during the day. Leaving home around 8 am and
return at 5:30 pm. The pup is left alone during this time. It was
like this for the past 6 1/2 months. Nothing new for the pup.
However, pup is starting to rip of the paper in her pen once she
urinates on it. It's quite a disturbing mess to come home to. I know
we can't be the only people who leaves there pup home during working
hours...so what does everyone else do. The Pen is about 4' x 4', with
food, water, bed and news paper to pee on. She has her toys and raw
hide (wide strip...little chance of swallowing it). When we are home,
during the evenings and weekends, she goes outside to do her thing.
It's been months since she made a mistake on the floor. So back to
the problem of her chewing on her urinated news paper. She doesn't
eat her "poop" (lacking for a better word).

As she starts to mature, she'll probably become even more destructive.
Your puppy just doesn't like to be left alone; it's a very social
breed. You would have been better off getting an adult dog.

Some things you can do to mitigate against the loneliness and
destructive tendencies, are to have someone visit her midday and take
her for a walk, take her outside to "go," etc., (which is why dog
walking and pet sitting are thriving businesses), consider getting
another dog (they can keep each other company), try weaning her off
newspaper altogether (although 9.5 hours is a very long time to make a
dog hold it, especially a small dog), unless you're willing to have a
poorly housetrained dog for the rest of her life. Or consider finding
her a another home where at least one owner is home all or part of the
day.

I think option one is your best bet.

Have someone visit her midday and take her outside to "go," walk,
play, etc.
