Default How to stop dog chewing ABS cable?

So what is the appropriate way to train a dog to no longer chew at an
ABS brake cable under a car? You'd think some duct tape could take
care of this but is there anyway of correcting the dogs behaviour? A
couple of days ago the dog chewed thru 7400 thb's worth of ABS cable
and that night my wifes mother chained the dog to a pole thinking it
would stop the dog from being under the car. Turned out to be a bad
idea as the dog didn't like being chained to a pole and subseqently
damaged a 10,000 thb plant pot trying to get free. Usually the dogs
are treated well. Now the dog is wearing the cone shaped hat you see
when dogs come out of the hospital to stop them biting at their
stitches but this surely isn't a good long term solution?

Wait just a minute! Your dog prefers ABS cable over Kongs, rawhide,
squeaky toys and so forth? That's one sick puppy!

Mushers typically use outriggers on their trucks to tie the
dogs out because it's not exactly unheard-of for dogs to
chew through (hydraulic) brake lines and it's a good idea to
put some space between the dogs and the underside of the
truck.

So a few years ago the guy who built my dogbox was out
training in late fall. He races open class sprint and he
had a big bunch of dogs pulling his ATV, but the trails were
icy and the ATV slid off the trail, down a hill, and got
wedged between a couple of trees. Fortunately neither Tom
nor the dogs were injured, but the ATV was good and stuck
and Tom couldn't get it out, so he was faced with the
problem of how to get all those dogs the several miles back
to the truck. He figured that he'd been out long enough for
the dogs to be tired and that they'd probably behave
themselves, so he unhooked them from the quad and tied the
gangline around his waist. Well, he judged wrong about how
tired the dogs were, and he was pulled face-first at a good
clip down several miles of rocky trail. He was pretty
banged-up so he called his wife to come get him. By the
time she got there the dogs were all unharnessed and boxed,
and Tom was feeling like he could drive home safely. She
still thought it was a good idea to follow behind him just
to keep an eye on his driving in case he had a concussion,
and she was very worried indeed to see him driving very,
very slowly. When they got home he explained that he had no
brakes, that one of the dogs had chewed through the brake
cable. The dog was rushed to the vet just in case it had
swallowed some brake fluid, but fortunately it was okay, and
Tom lived to do lots of other risky crap.

Anyway, I don't know about cables, but dogs sure do like to
chew on brake lines.

You could rap it in duck tape with hot peppers stuck to the glue or you
could build the dog a decent sized pen to keep him from getting poisoned or
eventually run over from lack of breaks.
